Is there any way to run 2 computer on one cable modem. I have two computers both running ME and I'd like to net work them togetgher and share the cable modem
Thanks
Computer A = Computer with cable modem and two NIC cards
Computer B = Computer to add to connection with one NIC
You can use a crossover cable between the second NIC on computer A and the NIC on computer B.
Set Computer B to obtain an IP address automatically. Set them both to the same workgroup using NETBeui. If you aren't sure post back and I or someone else will explain. There are a lot of posts on LAN networking.
That is the cheaper way to do it. However, the best way is to buy a router with more than one built-in ethernet port. This router will add a "hardware" firewall to your home LAN. In this configuration, you'll end up buying a $100 router (I recommend Linksys or D-Link) and you'll only need a total of 2 NIC cards. The router acts as the interface between the PC's that are connected through it. If you follow Cirrus9's suggestion, it will work just fine too with the lack of security. Software firewalls are great, just not as secure...
I'm a HUGE!!! fan of the Linksys 4 port cable/dsl router. I've seen them as cheap as $65 recently and they are a piece of cake to install (practically idiot proof). The model for that is: BEFSR41.
PS.... I used to do the 2 NIC card thing on my pc at home for the same purpose and my system's performance was AWFUL (. But then I finally broke down and bought the router and everything is wonderful.
I searched for a linksys 4 port and found a new one for $89 and a $10 rebate at Comp USA,that was a cheap as I could find.I bought one(there were a bunch)at Ebay for $66+$10 priority shipping.

All you need is the router, a NIC for both pc's, and CAT5 Ethernet/LAN cable to connect each pc to the router. That's it! The cable modem should have been setup by Time Warner with a cable already which will go to the router (WAN port).
I am also currently using the 2 NIC setup and using Internet connection sharing. WHen I signed up with AT&T RoadRunner, they had me register the MAC address of my NIC I suppose so they can ansure that I am only using that one computer. If I were to get a router, would I need to register the MAC address with them, or will I suddenly be billed for the Home Networking option AT&T charges?
Nope.... If you get the LinkSys router then you can give that the MAC address of the NIC that you registered with them.
On another note, you don't really have to register another MAC address with them, you just have to plug the router in and reboot the modem so that it re-registers the new MAC address. I've never seen them charge for a "Home Networking" when this has happened. If they do, call them and tell them that your NIC went bad and you had to get a new one. I've had people in my office who use AT&T and when they get a new computer or something like that, it is never a big deal with AT&T. I actually had one person call AT&T and they said to just reboot the cable modem.
I have never setup a network or ethernet card before and was successful. My setup at home used two ethernet cards both set to automaticly set ip addresses. I used a 4 plug router from speedstream. Set the second computer internet settings to LAN with autodetect. Road runner set up the first computer. My hardest problem was getting my ethernet card to work because of hardware problems.
Road runner plugs into the WAN on my speedstream. the two pc's plug into the front of the box in the lan plugs.
