Hi,

I have a Toshiba Equium A60 laptop that is driving me insane! After finally managing to reinstall xp pro and get all the Toshiba drivers installed in the correct order (what a nightmare!) I have hit a problem with the last damn update!!

Everytime I try to install .net 1.1 sp1 I get the error message as follows: "SL2.tmp has encountered a problem and needs to close". This happens either when I use Windows update or download the instaler. The only difference in the error messages is the number in the message (SL**.tmp).

I have tried to get around this problem as follows:

1. Reinstall .net and update again - No dice.

2. Clear temp files and reinstall - No dice

3. Reinstall in safe mode as administrator - Guess what....

4. Re-register auto update dlls and clear SofwareDistribution folder - Getting bored now....

Any ideas anyone?

Regards,

Rob.

see:
thread779-1384742

then navigate to MicroSoft, DL the distributable and install it instead of over the UPDATE feature...

and do a thorough antimalware scan (including Viral, Spyware, trojan, etc.)...

Progs, I use:

Ewido, now AVG AntiMalware:
SpyBot S&D:
Ad-Aware:
SuperAntiSpyware:
This should get you started...

Thanks Ben,

I did try both the distributable and the update options to no avail. As for malware, this is a fresh xp pro install, and the only websites visited have been toshiba uk support, majorgeeks.com, MS update and here. I'm behind a hardware firewall (sonicwall) so I will presume it is clean for now.

Just to let you know also that I got this issue sorted. Stupidly I didn't check the event viewer until now. I wish I had done as it was reporting an error with .net 2.0 everytime I tried the 1.1 sp1 install. A quick repair of the 2.0 and 3.0 installs and the 1.1 service pack went straight in!

Back to majorgeeks to pick up all my security stuff now ;)

Thanks.

Rob

Glad you got it sorted...

and thanx for the feedback, as to what was the problem, so that others with similar problems may find this useful...

*follow up!

I was using a XP Pro install prior to SP2 on this machine, and after 5 reinstalls with pro and home I managed to get my hands on the original Toshiba disks for the machine.

Everytime that I reinstalled the OS on this machine (and I got better each time!) I had errors after using the machine and installing software over time.

The first install I could not get past SP2 without lsp and winsock fixes to restore conectivity .

The second install worked slightly better as I did the Toshiba updates and drivers in order although two failed and caused me to have to resort to....

Install 3 and 4 were much the same.....

The fifth was done with the orig Tosh XP Home restore disks and has so far been faultless... Even after removing all the nasty trials and bloat they chuck in "free".

It looks like I'll have to live without Pro on this laptop. Shame. Toshiba have really let me down, and considering the problems these laptops have with overheating and the power sockets I can't see myself recommending them to anyone, much less buying one myself.

Regards,

Rob
