I have found several items in ICILOC where the value of the QTYONORDER field is less than zero. I would have thought this was not possible. Any thoughts on how this could happen?

Version?
Service packs?
Third party products?
Did you run Data Integrity for O/E with the Fix Minor Errors box checked?

Version 5.5a, PU3, no 3rd party. I have not yet run any data integrity checks. It is a 250Gb database, int check takes a while ...

Mmmm, ok. Any thoughts, though, on WHY this might have happened?

There was an undocumented feature in OE that did not update the qty on order correctly, this was fixed in a service pack. The fix is to run a data integrity check on IC with fix errors checked as tuba said.
