Need XP pro / Exchange 5.5 login help.

In our office we are running exchange 5.5. I just had a new system come in and installed XP pro. Now when I try to setup Outlook 2000 to connect to the exchange server I am prompted for a user name, domain, & Password when I click the "check" button. This happens even though the settings are set to NT Authentication. After filling out all the required info I still cant login. A message appears telling me I have the wrong login credentials. None of the other passwords work either. Now I know it’s not an exchange account problem or an outlook setting problem because I setup the same account under a different profile on a Win98 system and the login went fine. It has to be something to do with how XP is dealing with exchange. If anyone has an idea let me know.

I think you are having a connection issue. To connect to exchange via outlook you need to be connected to the network. Can you browse the network? Can you ping the Exchange server? Check your networ settings and protocols and make sure everything is kosha

I have access to all network items. On start up I can login onto the network fine, use the server, shared directories, printers etc. So I know that this is not the problem. Any other thoughts? Thanks!

Can you give me a descripton on how you are configuring your outlook profile? I usually do this from the outlook properties first before connecting to the mailbox.

What version of outlook do you have?

You did do a ==>ping (exchange server) ? Did you get "Reply" messages back?

Yes I got a reply from the server. Using Outlook 2000 (9.0.0.2711)
I right click on the outlook icon to bring up the options.
Then click Add - then select Microsoft exchange server from the "Add service to profile" selection box.
In the new window I put in the server name "SERVER01" and the mail box name. Not sure if these are case sensitive but I made sure they match the exchange settings. Set connection timeout to 240. On the advanced tab I have Login Network security set to NT Authentication. Back on the general tab I click the check button and It once again asks for USER, DOMAIN, & PASS. All of these items are correct and have been verifyed many times. When I use the same version of Outlook on a 98 system I can setup the account and I have no problem logging on.

Question. On your XP system our you logging into your "Network Domain" or are you logging in to the "Users Domain"?

When I logon on, it to a domain called "WORKGROUP". On the server this is the only domain listed. Like I said, I have access to all the network resources for that users account.

On an XP system (and Windows2000 Pro system) when you get the login screen (provided you have joined this computer to the domain which I believe you did) you should have 2 domains. The Network Domain and the Users Workgroup domain. When you login to the workgroup domain you can still access network resources. But you need to login to the "network domain" in order for you to setup the outlook profile and to access email. I tested this on a Windows2000 XP system just now. I tried logging in to the Local Workgroup domain and I got prompted with a "username, password and domain".

When you get the login screen, click on the "options" button and verify what domain you are logged in. If you are logging into the "workgroup" domain, click the down arrow and choose your Network Domain. Then try to setup the outlook profile.

There is another way you can get this to work if you want to stay logged into the workgroup domain.

(1) Open up Computer Management. (This has the local users and groups)
(2) Create a local user with the identical username and password.

Example: On your NT and Exchange server, If the username is ==>bgates and the password is ==>billions than your local user name must be identical ==>bgates and password ==>billions You will also need to set the "password never expires" otherwise you will have to reset the password every time the password changes on your network.

I tried everything you said. No luck, I still get the same message "EXCHANGE SERVER - The Logon credentials you supplied were incorrect... bla bla bla..." . @ the windows logon I have the option of logging onto the network called "WORKGROUP" or logging onto "WKSTN09 (this computer)".... I even set up the user account so it would be the same on both the user domain and the network domain. Any other suggestions? Thanks for the help so far.

This is a tough one. You have tried everything I would have tried. You mentioned you logged into workstation09 and added the same exact user and still no joy. Have you tried logging in as a different user and seeing if you get the same results? How about this, Login as "Adminstrator" to the Network Domain or as Exchange Admin and see if you can add this user's profile and connect, and see if you have any luck? If you login as Administrator and you still have the same problem than Maybe try reinstalling Outlook? Because if you can not do it logged in as Adminstrator than there is some other problem. In that case I would try reinstalling outlook. One other question. When you installed outlook2000 what user id were you logged in as when you installed this? Reason I ask is because I have seen weird issues where office2000/outlook2000 has been isntalled under a user id OTHER THAN THE ADMINISTRATOR OF THE LOCAL DOMAIN (Even as Administrator to the Network Domain). Good practice to install applications logged in as Administrator to the local domain (not the network domain) then login as the user to the Network Domain and try to set the profile up after that.
