Have 256MB Lexar JumpDrive (USB 1). Need details on how it is formatted. Does it have 512 byte sectors like a diskette? Where is the directory? etc? etc?

My Lexar JumpDrive Secure shows as FAT but it didn't have to be formatted before I started using it. My Lexar JumpDrive Trio uses the Secure Digital modules from my camera and they didn't have to be formatted. There's no moving parts like in a hard drive or floppy/Zip disk.

my Lexar Jump Drive 512MB did not need to be formated, just plug it in and go. However you can format it using either NTFS, FAT, FAT32 and it will only allow the default allocation size. (what ever that is).

I'm glad that you asked this question. I have a Lexar 64 Mb Jump Drive (USB 1.1), today had a file get "stuck" on it - could not delete the file or do anything else with it (tried 3 different computers, two with Windows 2000, one with Windows 98SE). I could add and remove other files as usual, just not this one. Inserted the Jump Drive into the USB port of a computer (Windows 2000) and went to Jump Drive with a right click in Windows Explorer. As Blujacket says format was shown as FAT. Clicked "Format" on the menu, then said "yes" - I really want to do this. In about 2 seconds the Jump Drive was "wiped clean" and reformatted (FAT). It is now working just fine.

I thought it would work, have done this with Compact Flash Cards on occasion and used them as a substitute for a Jump Drive.

On a 1.4MB floppy the directory starts at 13Hex and the first file starts at 21Hex and it is formatted in 512 byte sectors. Now could someone please tell me what the corresponding numbers are for the 256MB Lexar JumpDrive? Where do I find the directory? Where does the first data file start? Properties show that it's formatted as FAT. Does that mean 512 byte "sectors"?

Have a slight problem with my Lexar JumpDrive. It works fine in several laptops and desktops but when inserted into Dell Inspiron 2500 it isn't recognised. Any suggestions?

Summerdale:
What OS do the different computers have? Win XP will recognize the drive, Win 98 needs drivers installed.

The Dell has XP as does this new PC, a Compaq R3000 (a later build). One laptop has 98SE and have loaded the special driver provided by Lexar. The JumpDrive works great on it as well as another laptop with 2K, and a desktop with ME. (I have several PC's I have acquired from friends to fix up and donate to church's.) Still unable to figure out why the JumpDrive isn't recognised by the Dell when I plug it into either USD port. Have contacted Dell and they are clueless as well as non-commital. It has to be something simple to activate the JumpDrive on the Dell. Wish Lexar had been more sympathetic ... one would think they would jump at any problem so they could sell more JumpDrives.
