Customer location has Nortel CICS. Voicemail type is unknown, i only have a grey box with a flash card.

Customer said that the voicemail worked just fine for years. They recently had a power outage and the voicemail started acting weird. By the time they called my company, the voicemail wasn't working at all.

I tried Feature 985 and it came up feature inactive. I can't get into the voicemail system at all. I haven't checked the terminals and sets menu to see if the phones are forwarded, but i believe that i shouldn't have to since feature 985 doesn't work.

Spoke with a buddy of mine who said that if Feature 985 doesn't work then the voicemail is dead and the only way to fix it is replacement. Is this true? is there another way to revive a non functioning voicemail system? a power cycle of the voicemail box didn't help.

Need to know what kind of voicemail Flash, NAM or Call Pilot 100/150.

1. So the Client has a CICS but you have the above? as a spare? why did you mention that?
2. Your spare or the clients voice mail does not have a name on the grey box or a part number inside? highly doubt that.
This should be the first thing to do is to identify it and this day and age take a photo when in doubt.

You should have at least opened the box to see it the power light is on.

Feature 906 might revive the Flashtalk if only the programming was lost.

In the UK, your description would describe it as a Startalk system and the faults I've always had were to do with the power transformer being the culprit.

I'd get someone to get that out first.

Not true at all. Suggest you get a tech in there that knows Nortal voice mail systems. Could be simply a programming issue.

I agree with FirebirdScrambler, I have had voicemail systems going bad and then crash, and it was almost always the power supply. A bad power supply will let the light on the system stay on but the system will not work. As for the feature 985 that is showing what port the VM is on and if the system is down that feature will not work. I would replace the power supply first...

Do this before you buy any hardware...I meant F903 above btw.

F983 -
it states "Log" then system is OK
if states "Password" then your system defaulted to factory settings, enter password to re-initialize it and reprogram
if states "Inactive Feature" then try F903 below

F903 - this on the later versions of Startalk Flash 1.9. 2.0, 2.1 -
-If states "Feature Codes" then your system defaulted to factory settings, say OK to the codes then proceed to F983 to initialize and reprogram the system.
-If states "Inactive Feature" then proceed with hardware checking
-Check the cables between voice main and station ports on the KSU by testing the ports with a phone in case they took a hit in the outage or surge.
-Proceed with any other hardware changes such as PS or Software or Main unit.

Take a picture if you still don't know what system it is.
Look at the the version of the Flash card too.

Call client and ask them to try all three and give you results, save you buying hard ware before returning
