School has a MICS w/ 6.1 software. The phone is where the kids press Intercom 9 and make calls. We want to restrict these calls and have an access code for the teachers. Do we have to use COS?

Thanks in advance!

Dave

No, make the access to the line pool something else like 85. This will be system wide, if you didn't know.

I would like to leave line pool access on 9, but set up a code for this set in addition. any other suggestions?

Thanks.

I think you are going to have to use COS then, but ptstechnician's idea is simpler since with COS you have to enter 9 followed by F68 followed by the 6-digit password which is 10 button presses total versus 2 for changing the access code to 85 or something similar.

Downside of going with simple is that people are lazy. you will get a teacher that is working with a student and asks the student to make a call for them and will tell the student how the call is made by dialing 85 etc. now you have just told the entire student body how to make calls! I have had this happen with one phone sytem where they were using a limited number of access codes (1 per department) and within 3 months of going to access codes their toll fraud was back up around $5,000 each month.

I finally convinced the customer to give each teacher one access code with the knowledge that they had to account for all calls made with their access code. the customer is changing access codes pretty regularily but their phone bill has gone down by thousands.

Moral: Simple is not alwayse better.

to make this work you will have to create access codes under COS and also set toll restriction on each phone. I would also put feature 68 on a button for each phone also.

In addition, if the customer wants to monitor the calling, you could install an SMDR, and 3rd party software to keep track of exactly who is calling whom.

Put your lines in Pool A.

Set up a route (say Route 001) which is set to "No Number" and uses line pool a.

Then set up a destination code as(your secret code)eg 2421
with absorb length 4 digits and uses Normal Route 001.

Then take away line pool access from each extension, also remove Exchange Access code (via System Programming).

When someone dials 2421(X) the system will absorb (remove) 2421 and then send the telephone number (X) to line to establish the call.

Hope this helps

pcomms' suggestion is a good alternative to COS. Like any solution, however, it's still dependant on the teachers keeping that code secret.

Until phones come with some sort of biosecurity, any solution is subject to abuse.
