I do not know anything about Apple computers (nothing to brag about, just the reality). I have a Mac IIci that I need to wipe and get rid of. The software is evidently loaded fine on the h/d. I do not have any software CDs for this machine (nor an Apple floppy).

How can I take what I have got (the floppies I use for Linux and XP) and reformat this baby? Perhaps I do not even need to use a floppy. Please help. Thanks.

What do you mean by 'get rid of'?

This is a very old computer that I do not see being easily recycled. If you are simply disposing of the computer in the trash, remove the hard drive and smash it. This will secure your data.

I suspect that only a bootable Mac 800k floppy will work here.

I finally decided to put my IICI into the trash last year....it was an old friend I had from new back in the early 90's...but saw no value in any of its components or as a piece of history....

Don't know what you intend to do with it...but If its something smart I missed, please DONT let me know...as I'll be sickened!

to wipe the drive you will need to obtain an apple system disk, since the apple needs to boot from somewhere. these are obtainable from various sites free. system 6 upto 8 i think.

you format the drive without this. other than actually hitting it with a hammer. and you wont be able to load xp onto an apple, different architecture altogether

Hi

Just go to the Apple old software download page

and download
Macintosh/System/Older_System/System_7.5_Version_7.5.3/System_7.5.3_01of19.smi.bin
and the following files to 19of19.

This .smi files are virtual floppy-disks, allowing you to re-create a real floppy-disk with an utility called DiskCopy. Normally, one of this files (probably the 17th or the18th) is the "Utilities1" disk, containing a system and a drive setup, that will allow you to boot on the floppy and format your HD. I'm not sure, but I remember that Mac IIci has a HighDensity floppy (1.4 Mo). Don't worry about the original formatting of the floppy (XP or Unix floppies), DiskCopy will reformat it to the Mac format.

Best regards
Claude

Thanks everybody. I found a SCSI card that was used for a tape drive in and old Dell Optiplex. I attached the MAC h/d to it and used Windows XP to reformat the Apple drive. I am going to save it and use it as a small D: drive now. But the rest of the computer is history.
