Hi, I am running Novell 5.0. Every couple of weeks the utilization goes to 40%+ (normally is under 10%, usually 1-2%).
When this happens users sometims cannot log in or open programs like Excell or Act and server is slow. I get no errors when DSREPAIR is run and no abend errors. The only way to resolve the problem is to reboot the server. I have no clue where to look for the problem. Any ideas?

I have the exact same problem, are you running a pure IP enviroment ?

I am not running pure IP but also IPX. I have also installed patch 6a.

First check the settings like
maximum receive packet buffer
maximum service processes
File lockings etc.

Steps :
Go to monitor and select server parameter,

check all Locks setting,
File system
Caching etc.

The default settings are set very low which can cause slowness to server.

Also, check for memory leaks in DS, LRU sitting time, Cache utilization. DS is supposed to use less than 20% (I think) of available cache. LRU sitting time should be more than 1/2 hour. Cache utilization should be no less than 85% for a standard file and print server.

I have seen this problem on rare occasions on both 4.x and 5.x servers. What is interesting to me is that by merely unloading and reloading the monitor.nlm the problem goes away. Good luck.

Hi

Are there any errors in your log file ?
What about compression - what are your settings ?

We has a similar problem and it turned out that some of the executable files on server were infected with a virus from an admin-type. Scan your entire server for viruses!
