I am working on a MS XP PC which displays the message
"An ActiveX control on this page might be unsafe to interact with other parts of the page. Do you want to allow this transaction?"
This occurs 5 times for each transaction, so it is a real pain. I would like to change the security level, but that option is grayed out under Tools, Internet Options, Security. Is there a way to enable the Security option, or disable the ActiveX warnings, in the Management Console, or in some other place with XP?
Thank you.

If it's greyed out, you probably don't have rights to change it. If this is your own personal PC, log on with the admin account and give yourself admin rights.

If it's a work PC, ask your IT helpdesk.

Hope this helps,
Dan

I understand fully what you are saying. But what I want is to be able to understand more of the workings of security issues.

It sounds like the application needs to be reconsidered. What is the ActiveX control that behaves this way? How does an alternate browser like Firefox or Opera behave on this same web page?

It is a webpage that displays the activex warnings.
I don't want to install Firefox, I am just the kind of person who likes to know how things work. My wife will throw an appliance away, I try to fix it.
I am perplexed and curious, and I like to tinker. I know a little about the MMC but want to know more, specifically why the Security option is grayed out, and how to change it.
Thanks.

Have I missed something?

You start off by asking if there's a way to change the ActiveX warnings, then say instead you want to know more how they work, now you're back to wanting to know how to change it.

What is it you actually want?

best not to mention how to Manage Add-ons, only kidding.

in IE Click TOOLS and you will see the above option. explore it to allow or disable active X add-ons you never knew existed on your PC.

don't forget while you are in TOOLS to click INTERNET OPTIONS, Security, Custom Level.

that should be enough to either help solve your problem and or tell you more about Active X machinations

What I was trying to find out is if we have something bad going on with your browser that's causing this. Is this a public web page that others can check, or something else? If not intentional, the behavior that you describe sounds like it might be related to malware.

smah, whoever owned this pc before me set it up so that everytime an ActiveX control (unsigned, I would guess),
pops up, the message displays.
The web sites in question are common and not malicious.
For instance, registry entry SOIEAK, UNSIGNEDACTIVEX, ALLOW.
I am assuming that this is what gets set, but I would like to know what MMC sets it. Or could I just change the registry setting?

MMC is Microsoft Management Console. It is an interface to many deeper parts of the system- it is not something that gets set, but a utility that might be used to set registry values. There are many MMC snap-ins, some of which relate to Intenet Explorer.

There are many registry keys & values associated with IE. To regain access to the registry keys (or group policies) that are unavailable in Internet Options, the easiest utility is probably this:
