Need to gather hardware info for company

I need to find a simple way to gather HW info for all the machines in our building, and I'd rather not walk to each one and start writing. Does anyone know of a free or cheap software product that will grab this info for me. Even if I have to use it on each machine rather that over the network.

Thanks...

Try to locate a program called TestCPU.exe which will give you the specs on most of the processors. That's about all that program will give you and it doesn't work on all PCs (I haven't figured out why), but it's a great way to get the Mhz and the type of processors for the ones it does work on.

Other than that, most Windows PCs have the software already installed. It's called Device Manager. Right click on My Computer, go to properties to get the Operating system and RAM under the general tab (if you're working with Win 95 or Win 98. - For Win 2000, you'll have to right click My Computer and choose Manage). You should be able to click on each piece of hardware and either find a properties tab or right click to get a properties choice.

If there are any third party utilities which do all the "looking" for you, I haven't heard of them.

Oh, one other thing I forgot to mention.

If the files on all the other machines are Shared and you can access them from the server or a remote workstation, then all you have to do is look at the Device manager on each machine via the Network. Of course, if they aren't shared or you don't have admin access to be able to do such a thing, then you're essentially out of luck.

Also, part of being able to access this stuff is dependent on what kind of network you have and how it is set up (ie, will it allow browsing of other computers?).

Let me know if any of this has helped!

Use Belarc Advisor. Very easy to run. Returns all info in a nicely formated HTML page.

Download for free at:

Ed Please let me know if the suggestion(s) I provide are helpful to you.

Send out an email and if they dont answer cut off their network privlidges. They will have to answer then.

Seriously, it depends on what you want. We keep a file that has all that information in it and we assign each computer a number. If you had an MIRC label maker and an inventory program and put a label on the front of every computer, you could just walk around and swipe the reader across the label. Or you could name each computer with that part number on the network names. By looking at the network server tree you could tell where everything is at. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

You are probably better off just going to each machine individually and logging what they have.
And oh-by-the-way, take a look at getting rid of any unwanted TEMP files or TEMP INTERNET FILES, (and see where they have been going, if they have I-net access).
Also look around for any unauthorized software, .exe's, etc.
This will be a chore - I did it for a company with 400 workstations all by myself, it took 2 weeks, but I also found (and fixed) a lot of 'problem children'.

Just do it and get it over with.

Also, check out EZ Audit ( ). It's reasonably cheap for what it does, and it will scan each pc for both hardware and software as they log on to the network. Just create a login script and assign it to the evryone group.

Its also quite good for letting you know who's been installing things they shouldn't have......

Thanks for the advice. I'm not too worried about user tampering, this is a call center and all the machines are locked up nice and tight. The pain is that I have to unlock the machine and reboot to see anything. It's tough because we're 24/7 so I can't just do a bunch at a time. It's also a mess here because whoever was here last (I'm new) didn't believe in documenting or standarizing (lots of "custom" PC's). That Belarc Advisor worked well though. It pulls anything you'd ever need to know about a PC, HW and SW.

Thanks again.
