Hello all,

The system: NEC NEAX 2000 IPS
The task: Have the same extension work in two different locations.

I know the original IDF and the new IDF where the voice backbone(s)are installed. I also know what pairs need to be used. When I add a length of crosswire from the existing extension in the MDF to the 'new' location, I have no dialtone on the 'new' extension, but the original works fine. My thoughts are this, either the 2000 IPS 'senses' the additional load and shuts the 'new' extension off, the wire is junk, or my punchdown tool is not working. I will bring in different punchdown tool tomorrow.

Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions are GREATLY appreciated!

Bruce

P.S. I work for a school district and I have MATWorx 7 available. Just trying to save the taxpayers some $$$!

Are you trying to dual service a Digital or analog phone? Why not make an exact mirror of the extension and put it on a seperate len? I have never heard of a digital phone being dual serviced and working when both instruments are plugged in.

You can not have two digital phones linked together. If the other location has a phone with another extension why not just program the extension that you need on it as a line appearance.

Sorry, I should have added the fact that it is an analog phone. Programming? I'd like to give it a try, but my employer won't pay for the NEC admin class.

Is there a FAQ where the process is detailed step-by-step? I know I'm really asking alot, but I thought I'd try. I believe I know where the manuals are located. I can repost with what manuals I found. The manuals would probably give me a better perspective of what I'm about to get into.

Thanks again!

Bruce

If it is an analog phone i would check the wiring. Out of curiousity, how far from the switch are the extensions? If you have a toner plug into the jack you want to dual service and verify it goes back to where the switch is. We all know how easy it is to have jacks that are labeled incorrectly.

NECPBXtech30:

I toned out the pairs to the office and back to the switch, re-punched the pairs and the crosswire and still no dialtone to the 'new' extension. I would guess the distance to be less than 200'. We have other analog and digital extension in the same area. One thing I did notice the other night is my tone generator does show polarity and continuity on other extensions in the IDF that is located in that area of the building, but not for the pair I want to use.

bwc58: EXCELLENT site, THANKS!

Still sounds like a wiring problem to me. Maybe a bad feed pair. Have you toned end to end? From your description it sounds like you are toning from the middle. you may want to take a look at the jack wiring also. personally i always start at the jack and work my way back to the switch verifying tone at each transition point and on both sides of the block. The likelyhood of this being an issue with the switch seems very remote. Just curious but have you verified the phone you are using is a working phone? And has there ever been a working phone at the "new" location in the past?
