Hi,

Maybe a noob question but i'm still gonna ask it :)

We recently have change our backup methode to an online backup methode.
data and mails
the support of the online service suggested to backup the mails in the following manner mon till fri transaction logs saturday full backup.

Earlier before the online backup i've created a backup using ntbackup (information store) the support guys suggested not to do this anymore beceause it would cause problems with the transaction logs.

Would it be a good idea to simple backup all the disks using ntbackup, i suspect it wouldn't change the transaction logs this way

Is there a manner that i can still make a local copie of the data without having any problems with the transaction logs.

ps can anyone tell me what's the best way to test the recovery of the information store.

The best online backups also leave a local copy of the backup to test recovery with and to use for quick restores. Which online backup product are you using?

Since the online backup is keeping careful track of transaction logs, they are right when they say that you should not do a regular NTBACKUP, since that will truncate (delete) the logs. I would ask your backup vendor these questions, since they will know how best to answer them, depending on the technology they use.

will i also have this problem if i create a full copy of the harddrive with ntbackup ?

If you do a full copy with NTBACKUP, you will not disrupt the other backups.

I'm not sure whether or not a full copy of the Exchange Information Store will allow you to restore it in a mountable state or not, as I've never tried it. I know it won't truncate the logs, but maybe it will still be restorable in the same way as a full backup would be.
