Hi

I am new to SNMP. We have one POP in the US with Lucent Excel switch, several Sun Solaris servers running Oracle db, several IBM-AIX servers and Win NT servers. We also use a Cisoco AS5350 gateway and 2621 routers. We have several PRIs coming in and two T-1 WAN connections to a remote offshore location.

Can a single SNMP software give me alerts and performance indicators and monitoring capability on all these devices including my local POP LAN and far end router and LAN ?

If so, which is the best software and a reasonable price ?

Appreciate any detailed feedback.

Any device that is snmp enabled and IP accessable from your network, can be managed from one platform. Furthermore with the right application you can manage your network and be specific to any device regardless of funcionality ie. routers, servers, CSUs, microwave or leased line transport, and etc. I'm currently involved in a project providing a NMS that databases, visualizes, fault alerts, notifies per event, and is web enabled. Although the application is targeted to the Cellular/PCS provider it is a great fit to manage any snmp enabled network. I'll enclose a link to the appplication and if you'd like more detail give me a call.

Not sure that this is what you need, but if you want a great perfomance monitor for this mixed UNIX and Windows platforms, I suggest you look at PerfMan.

Information is available at and I'd be happy to answer any questions.

I highly recommend Aprisma Spectrum

Answer to question 1 - yes you can do it.

Answer to question 2 - "What is the best product for cheapest price?" is likely to start a religious war.

There are many network monitoring tools for a variety of prices. There are open-source products for no cost (I won't say free because your time and expertise are never free). There are "Manager of Managers (MoMs )" for hundreds and hundreds of thousands.

What is right for you is up to you to decide.

The trade offs are:
-features,
-functionality,
-price, and
-expertise-level needed to maintain.

Just be aware going in that any tool to be properly installed and maintained will take a HUGH investment in time by highly-skilled technician(s).

Good Luck!

I agree with Patrick. We are using SNMP to manage a wide variety of nodes from narrow-band connections, .11b wireless, Cisco, IBM AIX, Windows-based, etc. and are having the most trouble getting the AIX environment to cooperate. We use SolarWinds Orion and it is great. It has its limitations, but the support is excellent and it is relatively cheap.
