Need pointers to how to design computer/parts ordering system

I'm looking for advice on where to find information, rather than directly looking for a solution itself and wondered if people can advise.

Ive been asked to design a system whereby people can put in an order for a item, then go through and select various options to go with it, for example they could buy a laptop, or desktop, then choose mouse, additional memory, printer, external drive etc.Or alternatively search for an item and order one of the items seperately, which are added to a basket

I'm finding it hard to create a relational database (MS SQL) for this, the main problem being that they want to show the spec for each object (which varies for each type), and also its relationship to other items. Also it needs to be easy for them (the administrators) to add new items in future without being web experts (ie via forms)

Iv'e seen systems online. For example most computer manufacturers allow you to buy a computer, then select various options before placing your final order. I wondered if there were any example systems available (for example Microsoft often do sample case studies). I might be able to look at and get ideas, or books or online references people could suggest. The problem is theres many store examples, but these usually have standalone objects and not ones where there is a relationship. For example certain memory only being optional on certain computers etc.

Problem is Iv'e no idea what such a system would be called so can't really search, so hope people may be able to suggest pointers.

Look for open source shopping carts. There are several of them out there, any many of them allow you to do this sort of thing.
