MICS 7.0
Norstar T7316e/T7316 phones currently installed. What, if any restrictions, can I buy to go with this? Should be a simple question, but not sure what is compatible with this system.
Does the ATA device plug in between the wall jack and the base station, essentially acting as a converter? I notice there are ATA-2 and regular ATA, does it matter which if I was going to pair it with a DuraFon 1x?
Very noob question so please be gentle in the reply. Ive been asked why we cant just take an ordinary digital or analog phone with a ATA and plug into the extension.
If you set up the extension with a T7316e and then just plugged in an ordinary phone, could you not access the one main line that this extension would be set to use?
When they asked me why we couldnt do the above, I didnt have a definitive answer and I know you guys will enlighten me.
Business phone systems are mostly digital, this means only a digital phone can be plugged into a jack that is connected to a digital port on the phone system.
If you want to use an analog device on the phone system then you must use an ATA the converts digital to analog.
Some system have a couple analog ports built in or you need to purchase the external ATA.
The ATA goes between the phone system and your analog device.
These two are digital phones by Nortel:
T7406 discontinued
T7406e is latest
I guess to reform my question would be, is the business phone system I have stated in the 1st post capable of working with any phone, providing I put in an ATA device if it is an analog phone? Basically, this Nortel System isnt dependent on what phones are on it. I could buy a cheap 5 dollar phone from Walmart with a ATA and have it call out and accept calls on 1 line, correct?
I always use a cordless ATT or VTECH with an ATA for several reasons. The Nortel cordless sets are very expensive and the employees drop them and break them or steal them.
Most customer will do without most of the features but you can use manually dialed feature codes with an analog set.
Since it seems like fire did this successfully, hopefully someone is nice enough to point out my mistakes.
Purchased a Motorola L601M Digital set to work with my above system. If I can get this to work fine on 1 line, I will be allowed to purchase either an Engenius 1X or the T7406e above. All I need it to do is be able to call out and receive calls on the one line. Hell I would settle for just receiving calls on one line.
This is how Im testing this phone. I currently have one extension in my office that I have a T7316e plugged into with all the buttons programmed and the ability to use any of our 5 lines. If I turn "off" all lines but 1, should I be able then to use this Moto as if it were on a 1 line system? Is there a special dial out code or should it function just like the T7316e? im assuming Im missing various steps but not 100% sure where to look. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks again all.

You have a Motorola single line analog phone thus you need an analog extension, to convert the 7316 phone extension you will need an ATA the ATA extension must be configured to acces a line pool and this line pool must also be configured with the appropriate lines to dial out and the acces code assigned to this pool.
Everything I can find on this phone states its a Digital phone, therefore not needing a ATA if I am reading into this correctly.
I have the ext set to Line Pool A, but need to assign lines to that pool. Im unsure of how to create an access code for said pool but was unaware I needed to so I will see where I get from here.

Its digital too its base probably but analog from there.
In other words if you can hook it up to straight to dial tone from the C.O. then its truly analog.....test it on their fax jack.
@Curly - damn thing worked on the fax line(got a dial tone) so I guess it isnt a truly digital phone. Ill return it to Newegg and try to find a pure digital one. Any suggestions on the cheap end? I dont care if it only works 5 ft from the base station, just need it for testing.
Thanks

Thanks ironhorse17,
I was on the phone with the guy/company who set up this nortel system and he echoed the same thing so I guess Im going to troll ebay and see if I can find a cheap old ATA.
Any suggestions?
