Last year a contractor installed a SQL based package on our Proliant ml370 member server, the trouble is they put it on the C partition!
It has grown and now the boot drive is running out of space, the best option is probably to get him back to reinstall on another drive, but can I make the partition bigger? I know Partition Magic will not work, but are there any other utilities out there that could move or merge a NTFS partition on an NT4 Server
Any suggestion would be welcome
NT4 Server SP6a
not PDC or BDC, running SQL 7 with Win98/ W2K clients
Thanks

Hi,

you could check out the url below, if you have more partitions on the same disk with enough free space resizing them is probably the fastest way for your problem.

A more scalable sollution would however be moving the SQL software away from the OS partition.

But that is up to you

If i read it correctly the volumemanager can do all the things that you want.

De rooie poon....is never alone

Acronis Partition Expert has been recommended elsewhere on this forum as an inexpensive partition manager that works on servers. As you probably know, PowerQuest (Partition Magic) do have a server product, Volume Manager, but its a lot more expensive than PM.

If this is SQL I assume you mean the databases are growing. It would be easy to simply just detach the databases move them to a different drive and then reattach them. You will not even have to uninstall SQL. And if this consultant did actually put you Databases on your C drive I would not hire him again.

Thanks for the suggestions,
Yes, I do mean that the database itself is growing, perhaps moving the DB is the answer to my problem, as the NT4 Server boot partition cannot be bigger that 4 GB, I am going to have to do this anyhow,
If I just move the folders to a new drive and change the ODBC data sources an the clients, will this work?

Actually the boot partition can be 7.8 GB but I would not worry with that as the databases should not be on the C partition anyway. To move the databases you will simply need to do a detach/attach. You will NOT have to change ODBC data sources on the clients. This article will describe what you need to do.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys,
In the end I had to call the DB company back in and get them to move the database to a bigger drive, they insisted on doing this themselves, I found that by moving the virtual memory swapfile from the C partition gave me enough free space to keep the show rolling until this was done,
But I learned a valuable lesson
