Hi,
Today I went to connect my USB Zip drive to my PC and the computer switched off completely. When I booted up again I got a keyboard error beep in Bios but windows started my USB keyboard no problem but couldnt find my mouse. When I switched the USB port the mouse was connected too I lost both devices...which is where I am at at the moment! So far I have tried...

Just the keyboard in all 5 USB ports.
Clearing the CMOS
Different Ring circuit in case I damaged the mains fuse.
Both the keyboard and Mouse work fine in a laptop so I know they are not damaged.
Since I reset the CMOS jumpers my computer just says press F9 to load default which I cant do since the Keyboard wont respond.
What I need to know is If I could have damaged the keyboard decoder but not enough that it would still be picked up by another(Newer) computer or if I have damaged the motherboard/USB controller??
I had this problem a few months ago except the then damaged keyboard wasnt picked up by another system so I replaced it!

Im not sure but seems like Im not getting enough current through my USB ports because the Numlock doesnt flash or anything when I boot.Is there a fuse between USB ports and the motherboard?
I dont have an serial/PS2 slots so I cant get a replacement keyboard without buying one..not a problem except the one I have at the moment seems to work?

Thanks in Advance
David

One other thing... when i boot with keyboard and mouse connected i get no error tone, just CMOS checksum error. This i could fix with F9, if the keyboard responded!

Did you try a ps2 keyboard? Try this till you can get set up then install USB keyboard.

Maybe try and get hold of a PCI USB controller card and try that... it sounds as if your motherboard USB controller has gone out but it may only be something you can correct in the BIOS if you can get there Help us to help you, please post back and tell us if this helped.

All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

In another post, the writer had problems with the system rebooting whenever they plugged in a USB device. Your problem may be related.

They solved their problem by pluging the computer into a different wall outlet on another circuit. I recommend you try this to verify that it isn't a problem with power.

If the problem still happens, you should verify that the power supply inside the computer is working properly. You can test it with a volt-ohm meter (looking for 12V, 5V and 3.3V) or try replacing it with a known good power supply.

Finally, my system had numerous USB problems from the day I built it so I avoided all USB devices. I was able to fix it by flashing the BIOS to the latest version (I used the wrong BIOS at one point so be careful that you use the RIGHT BIOS for your motherboard). I also updated all of the motherboard drivers from

Thanks for all the replies,
It was the keyboard that was gone, when the problem happened I must have damaged the keyboard enough that windows can reconise the keyboard but the BIOS cannot because when i tried to boot using the keyboard on another system it failed but when I plugged the keyboard in when Windows was running it worked fine.
Anyway the keyboard stopped working at all now so im gonna replace it....twice in 3 months!maybe im doing something wrong!!!

I've seen older 95 systems freak out if you plug in keyboards while they are up and running. You have to shutdown then connect the keyboard then boot.

hey,
thanks for the replies..
Access, I wish the problem was that simple and Princesstippytails the keyboard didnt blow when I plugged it in but when I plugged the USB Zip into the computer....maybe It drew to much current from the motherboard???
