Hi,

We have an Exchange 5.5 Server with a 4Gb & 2GB IDE HardDrive they are partitioned c: d: e: We have come to a point that we need to install a new HDD, I want to install a new 40GB drive and remove th e2 old drives.

What would be the best way to shift Exchange 5.5 to the new drive? what options do i have available to me?

Thanks

Tony

The easiest way - provided you have a free IDE port - would be to add the disk to those already there and use that for the private store.

Disable all automatic Exchange services.
Shutdown.
Install disk.
Configure BIOS as necessary.
Reboot.
Use regedit to edit the private store location settings -see: <
Enable and reset all diables Exchange services
Restart services.

Another would be copy the existing disks to the new one to replace them both. Use a disk copy tool like 'ghost' or 'diskimage' to so this.

Finally, you could try reinstalling the OS and Exchange using the new disk but it gets quite involved when preserving the exchage servers name so you don't need to reconfig all clients. See:

If it's IDE, just get a copy of Ghost and move the image! It will take you about an hour and you'll be done!

Thanks very much for the replies.

Will Norton,s Ghost copy NT 4.0 Server partitions?

Thanks

Hi tvale

I would use Partition Magic. Use the boot floppy to go into PM at boot time. Copy the partition from the old 2Gb drive onto the new drive, then resize the partition. Works with NTFS partitions no problem, I've done this several times when upgrading Hard Discs.

Partition Magic will do what you want - and very nicely too - works with FAT, FAT32 (not applicable in this case) and NTFS.

Has the added advantage that you don't need to go into the registry!

I have install the 40GB hdd but BIOS only recognizes 33GB

Thank

The IDE drive I want to replace has c drive as fat32 and d & e drive as NTFS.
Do I need to partition & format first before I run Ghost?

I am still looking at my options at at upgrading our Exchange Server IDE Hard Drive. If I use partition Magic will I have any issues because the Server is a BDC and also with the SID?

Thanks

Tony

There shouldn't be a problem as the system data will remain the same.

In the worst case, lets say everything goes wrong and you need to reinstall, loosing the SID won't hurt the Exchange install provided you have a complete backup. If you rebuild the exchange server (after deleting the old server registration from the domain) with the files distributed on the various partitions as before and with the same server name, you should be able to drop the .edb files into place and the thing will fire up fine - the existing clients won't be effected neither. You can also install the new server as a new BDC as well (after the previous domain registratration for that server name was deleted).

This is worth going through before you try to upgrade - especially the bit about recording where all files are located
