Need Help with TOC in Word

I have created a TOC in Word. When I originally attempted to mark the desired text for the TOC, Heading 4 was not an available choice (just 1-3 for whatever reason). So, I decided to enter it (or force it) into the field in the toolbar and was able to mark the text as Header 4. However, it's not being recognized in the TOC.

I'm not an expert in the TOC world....any help is very much appreciated!

Well, that's a good question but I don't think so. The style did not exist in the drop down (is that what you're asking?)

I just created a NEW style named Heading_4 (Heading 4 is somehow reserved) base on Heading 3.

I Formatted some headings in my document.

I inserted a TOC and got the heading that I formatted as Heading_4.

Sorry, but it DOES work!

No, I know you're correct I'm just trying to figure out where I zigged where I shoulda zagged. I'm going to start from scratch and see what happens (not a fun prospect). Thanks again for your help!

If you have a Header 4 style, just modify the style to be a heading type. No need to, "start from scratch and see what happens!"

I am not quite following what is the issue/question/problem.

ToC are generated. By default, the text used for the ToC entries is the text which has the styles marked as the ones to be used. Using styles as the source for ToC entries is the default. You can, in fact, not use styles at all. You can use manually marked ToC entries with ANY text, or Outline levels. However, using styles is the easiest method.

The default is:

Level 1 ToC = text using "Heading 1" style
Level 2 ToC = text using "Heading 2" style
Level 3 ToC = text using "Heading 3" style
etc.

However, you do NOT have to use them. You can assign any style you want to the ToC levels. They do NOT, repeat NOT, have to be based on a Heading style. They can be any style at all.


So....

Could you please clarify: "When I originally attempted to mark the desired text for the TOC"? Did you put in a TC (Table of Contents) field? Just to expand on using TC fields - as opposed to styles - say you have:

"The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog."

and say it is Normal style (the style in this case does NOT matter). You can put a TC field at the start, like this:

{TC "Yadda" /l1 }The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

Now if you generate a ToC, but unchecking use Styles, and check use Table field codes, you will get a generated ToC:

Yadda............................page number

Even though:

1. the ToC entry is not from text with a specified style
2. the ToC entry text is NOT the text at the location (page number)

Hi all,

By default, when you insert a Table of Contents into a Word document, it defaults to heading levels 1-3. You can easily add more heading levels by:
. Select the whole Table of Contents field and press Shift-F9. You should see something like: { TOC \o "1-3" \h \z }
. Change the '3' to whatever heading level you require ('4' in this case)
. Press F9 to update the field.

To be able to incorporate the 4th heading level, the relevant headings in the document must be formatted with that Style (eg via Format|Style).
