Need help with macro to modify tabstops in Word 2003 documents

My users create journals that are 5.5" x 8.5" (2 up folded). They frequently have to incorporate amendments into the journal that come to them formatted for 8.5" x 11" paper, have multiple indents, tabs, columns etc. No two are formatted precisely the same and most contain custom tabs. I need to reduce the size of the documents for incorporation into the journal without loosing the formatting or going off the page. How do I cut the tabstop length in half without having to designate each tabstop and assign a value? I can do it with indents and other types of formatting but haven't figured out the tabs.

If you use styles, there is no need for any macro. You just paste the amended text and apply the appropriate style.

If there is direct formatting conflicting with the style, select the text and use either Reset Character (Ctrl+Spacebar) or Reset Para (Ctrl+Q) or both.

Thank you for your post. The (Ctrl+Spacebar) is a useful tip for the character format, thanks. Resetting the paragraph totally fubars the amendment format though. There are multiple styles in the journal and no way of knowing where the amendment will go in that document. Also, the amendments are all different and may contain tables or columns or just about anything.

If the documents are that complex, I fail to see how a macro is going to simplify it.

Ctl+Q resets the paragraph to match the style applied. I don't see how it can fubar the format: it should do just the opposite: styles are there to ENFORCE a format. If Ctrl+Q fubars the formatting, then the style isn't set up correctly.

I did try recording a macro but still couldn't figure out any way to halve the length of all the tabs at once. Some of these amendments are 30 or more pages with custom tabs in parts of the document, so when recording a macro I still have to alter the tabs by paragraph and specify the change for each tab. When the user is dealing with multiple amendments and time constraints it isn't practical. I posted the question and what I have of the macro to the VBA forum as you suggested. Thank you.
