I'm trying to setup a wireless network in my house. I'm getting a weird error though. The computer I'm trying to setup cannot connect to the internet. It can't use AIM either. But it can ping websites and receive the acknowledgements back from the websites.

There is a cable modem which is then connected to a Netgear wireless router. There are 2 computers that i'm trying to connect to this network. One of the computers is directly connected to the cable modem through the USB port, and this works fine. The other computer is trying to connect by the wireless connection but doesn't work (the problem described above). I've disconnected the computer that works (USB port) thinking that might be the problem but the wireless computer still doesn't connect. Any help would be great.

It is likely the modem has some router functions, including DHCP. Set the IP of the router to 192.168.2.1 in the setup of the router and try again with a rebooted wireless workstation.

How are you trying to connect? Are you using a laptop with built in wireless? Is it 802.11b or 802.11g? Some built in wireless cards are not compatible with certain wireless routers. Have you used the connection wizard in the router settings?

Of all the things I've ever lost, I miss my mind the most......

Sounds like your router isn't being used for what it's made for. Use and enthernet cable plug into the WAN port on your router and configure it for PPPoE if that's how you connect. connect your comps to the router. if how ever this is the way you want it, try enabling connection sharing for your modem on the stationary computer.

I have had the same exact problem you describe...could connect 2 other computers (one direct cable and other USB) but wireless could ping websites but could not get on the internet. The problem turned out to be 2 things. By the way this was with Windows XP professional on a Dell Lattitude:
1. I had to change the default channel that my router was broadcasting to another channel that would not be used by other wireless devices (such as cell phones/wireless phones etc.)

2. The most important change however, was removing Microsofts default personal firewall software in Add/Remove Programs. Eventhough I did not have this firewall activated, the software was interferring with ability to successfully connect to the DNS server.

The computer I'm trying to setup cannot connect to the internet. It can't use AIM either. But it can ping websites and receive the acknowledgements back from the websites.

When you do a ping what are you pinging? IP addresses or host names?
