Hi

I thought that I had this problem fixed but I guess I was wrong.
The problem is that Windows XPMCE keeps downloading updates for Outlook Express that can’t be installed.

Every time my computer shuts down I get the installing updates routine and it sit there for ages unless I click the shut down without installing updates button.

The latest is “Junk Email Filter (KB921580)”.

I don’t use Outlook Express, so I have tried having it both installed and uninstalled, but it still keeps doing it.

I went to the Microsoft web site and downloaded a couple of the updates as executable files and tried to install them, when I do this I just get a, “This update cannot be applied” message with no explanation as to why.

All I want Windows to do is to stop downloading that trying to install updates for Outlook Express with out turning off Automatic Updates altogether.

Does anyone know how I can do this?

Mike

Hi Mike,

Take a look in the event viewer. Click Start > Run > Type eventvwr > Click OK

Are there any errors regarding the update.

Also the update is for Outlook not Outlook Express. Do you have outlook installed, it is part of the office suite. If you don't use outlook then you could simply uninstall Outlook.

Shall we file the following under "famous last words"?

"I think that I solved it.
It seems that the Office Source Engine, whatever that is was disabled and stopped the update from being installed".

Keeps downloaded same update over and over?

Try some of these.

You cannot install some updates or programs

This one may work, "Method 10: Clear all files in the software distribution folder".

Hi again.

Well I went through all this stuff and nothing would make it stop trying to install that update.

Finally I uninstalled Microsoft office and rebooted my computer, it still kept trying to install it every time I shut down.

I then tried to reinstall Office 2003.
Now it won't install. Every time I get half way through then I get an error message about a page long saying I should contact Microsoft support. When are they going to fix it so that you can copy and paste the error messages, I'm always too lazy to spend the time writing the whole thing out so I can post it.

I finally just installed my copy of Office 2000, it went in fine I only install Word and PowerPoint anyway.

The same was true of Office 2003; I only installed Word and PowerPoint. I didn’t even have Outlook installed.

For now I'm not going to worry about it, I’ve spent too much time on this already.

Oh, by the way when I installed Office 2000 it stopped trying to install the updates and it’s working fine now.

If I have to do a PowerPoint presentation some day I’ll worry about getting the later version reinstalled but I don’t care which version of work I’m using right now.
