I have a HP Proliant DL380
Two identical internal hard drives both IDE. Dont ask me thats just the

way it came.
Disk 0 is the system disk with the OS on it
Disk 1 is what I want to be the mirror
Both Disks are Dynamic
The problem is that the option for add mirror is greyed out.
I tried the diskpart command line way of doing it too and it didnt work

either it shows "The disk management services could not complete the
operation"

This is what I want to do: But add mirror is greyed out!!
Mirror the boot and system volume
In this scenario, disk 1 is the disk on which the image of disk 0 will
be mirrored.

Note Partitions are referred to as volumes when the disks are dynamic.
1. Disk 1 must be unallocated space before you can proceed with
mirroring.
2. Right-click disk 0 (which contains the boot and system files), and
then click Add Mirror.
3. A dialog box opens in which any disk on your system that is
available for mirroring is displayed. Select the disk of your choice
(in this example, it is disk 1), and then click Add Mirror.

Both disk 0 and disk 1 will now have the same color code, the same
drive letter, and the volumes will have the status note "Regenerating"
displayed while the information is being copied from the first disk to
the second disk. The system will automatically size the volume of the
new mirror to the same size as that of the original boot and system
volume.
4. If you now want to boot from the new mirrored disk, you have to
change the Boot.ini ARC path that points the computer to the partition
in which the system files are located.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
Chris

Right-click the unallocated space on disk 1, and then click New Volume.
In the New Volume Wizard, click Next, click Mirrored, and then follow the instructions on your screen.

A+/MCP/MCSE/MCDBA

That is greyed out also for both drive 0 and drive 1.

Chris

Right click the OS drive (drive 0) and select MIRROR. You want to mirror the OS drive to the unallocated space on disk 1.

Im affraid you havent read some of my post. I said its "greyed out" meaning not available.

Thanks,
chris

My apologies. I did read your post, but the other post said to right click on disk 1 (which is technically incorrect). Did you check the jumpers on disk 1? I have never encountered this before, but it could be physical hardware related. Try completely removing the drive (using Device Manager), reboot and let the OS find the drive again. Make disk 1 dynamic (yuck) and then try to mirror again. It won't hurt to blow disk 1 away over and over because nothing is on it.

Right now the jumper is set for Cable select Im pretty sure. Would it be better to be master just as drive 0? Or should it be Slave?

Thanks,
Chris

I would not use cable select. Both of these drives are on a separate IDE channel (hopefully), right? Make one master ad the other secondary master and that should work fine.

IF you do change the HD from Cable select to Master/Slave, you also need to replace the IDE cable ! I generally throw the cable select cables away as to not mix them up with the regular ones.

Yeah today I changed the jumpers to match the drive 0 and looked again and still no add Mirror option.

Dumb question here, but are the disks identical disks (manufacturer, size, model)?
