Greetings,

Firstly I would like to just say that I'm new to this forum and new to the norstar system as well. I'm trying to gather as much information I can about a phone system we have in place here. Down in the POP room I see what I think is a PBX, but I'm not sure that it’s not just a voice mail system.

There are four boxes side by side. Each box is labeled:
1.) Application Module II
2.) M12X0
3.) M0X16
4.) M8X24-D5

I thought I might also find some information on our phone bill, but I don’t know what to make of it. Here is a list of the charges that appear on the bill which I believe to be related to the norstar system:

1.) Centrex III line-single wire ctr
2.) First 5 PSTN connections
3.) Business Line
4.) 0.4 km-loc sig chan A

I just need some information to get me started. I'm not afraid to do some heavy reading, but right now I just don't know where to begin. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks in advance,

Steve

It is a Norstar phone system and voice mail. You say you "need some information to get me started"...but do not have a specific question. Not knowing your background, the best general information I can give you is find a good vendor if you need changes made to the system. A vendor will be able to ask you how you want it work and program it accordingly. They can also train you in its proper use, and explain the systems capabilities.

Sounds like you have a
8 line 24 station Norstar System with DR5 software
M 0x16 should be a Fiber Module
M 12x0 could be a Pri/T1 Digital or trunk card

Well, what I'm trying to do is setup a fax system which routes faxes based on DID. I have learned that i can get an analog DID line and connect that directly to a DID capable modem. But that is rather expensive, and I have heard that a work around would be to have the PBX answer the incoming call, the PBX would then replace the DID information with DTMF tones which my fax server can read, and route the fax based on that. This second method would save me from having to install a separate line.

I'm not sure though, if any of this is possible with my equipment. I also don’t know if the connection to CO would need to be changed to support this?

Thanks again,

Steve

1.) Application Module II- most likeley your voice mail
2.) M12X0 -trunk cabinet (12 lines depending on cards)
3.) M0X16 - station cabinet (16 stations)
4.) M8X24-D5 -main unit (8 lines, 24 stations, depending on cards)

If this is possible, i would need between 10-20 fax numbers

I just wanted to follow up with CyberWorld's comments. He said: "M 12x0 could be a Pri/T1 Digital or trunk card"

Since Pri has 23 channels can i assume that i can make 23 simultaneous voice calls over this line? Also would this ISDN line carry the DID or DNIS information so that i could integrate it with my fax system or would that be an additional feature i would need to setup with the telco?

If this is the case then i could avoid having a separate analog DID line and use the ones i already have, which is exactly what i need.

Is there a way to verify if in fact this is a Pri line?

Thank you all for your help!

Don't even bother trying - yes other PBX's can do it, but not Norstar.

Norstar will strip the DTMF tones required by your fax server.

Either get another phone system or just get yourself the DID capable modem.

Actually I was hoping that I could setup the Norstar to add DTMF after passing the call to the faxserver. Ideally the way it should work is;

1.) PBX detects the call and then rings the fax server.
2.) Fax server answers the rings and waits for the DTMF
3.) The PBX sends the DNIS information as a DTMF to the faxserver, and then connects the call.
4.) Fax server goes into fax mode and the fax is received.

Is this not possible with my PBX?

Norstar can do this, I've done it. However I did it with an MICS 4.1, if I remember correctly. Not sure how or if would work on the 8x24.

M8x24DS-DR5 is the main KSU (Key System Unit)
M = Modular You can add other Trunk/Station modules
8 = 8-LS/DS Loop Start with Disconnect Supervision CO Lines (IF your M8x24 does NOT say DS then you will only have LS trunks DS is needed for the voice mail)
24 = 24 Digital station ports (Telephones)
12x0 Trunk Module (You can have up to 12 CO lines with this module)
In the 12x0 Trunk Module you can add up to 3, 4x0-Trunk Cards 4x0 = 4 CO Lines DID, LS GS etc
16x0 Digital Station Module = 16 Digital Stations (Telephones)
This System cannot accept a digital T1 circuit. If you have a digital circuit you will need a channel bank (NOT PRI wont work).
