need help connecting xp home to nt 4.0 server

Is your nt server actually member of a workgroup? (or is it set up as domain server).
Have you tried direct access - type \\ntservermachinename in the run box on Xp machine and see if it finds it (should prompt for a username/password, then open explorer window showing all the shares on the nt server)
Or \\xphomemachinename in run box on NT server.
