I received and error message on boot up into Win XP Pro. Lsass.exe - Application Error (ok to terminate) and then followed by Services.exe - Application Error. Screen when blank and only had a mouse pointer. Could not boot into safe mode - same errors. Tried running the recovery console to repair the windows installation. No luck. I can browse the windows folder and sub-folders through the recovery console prompt. When I look at the rest of the folders they combe back with a byte count of zero. Took out the drive and put into disk enclosure with a USB connection. Connected to another notebook as external drive. It can be seen in disk manager but not as a drive in my computer. Disk manager reports the partition as healthy. I believe (not sure) that the File Allocation Table is corrupted. Need to recover data files. And yes, I was an idiot and haven't done a backup in a while. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Sorry for the late respone. I was able to recover the data. I could see the partition only in disk manager as a healthy partition, but could not see it under my computer. I suspected the file allocation table was corrupt. I did find a nice utility software from partition-recovery.com that was fantastic. Created a bootable cd with usb support - saw the files - re-created the table and was able to recover 100% of the data.
