I have some column of data in the 100k or million dollar range. I'd like to show the data in graphs but have the labels show as 400K instead of 400,000 for example. Is there a way to do this without having to create a new column of data /1000?

You can format numbers with a custom number format of:
#,##0,"K"
which will show you numbers as you want. See if that passes through to the parts of the graph that you want changed.

Cheers, Glenn.

I use that format to put the "K" on the end, however that doesn't change the number of digits. I.e. 400,000 simply becomes 400,000K. I want 400,000 to appear as 400K. Typically I just add another row and divide the source data in each cell by 1000 to get the numbers to appear the way I want but I'm hoping there's a better way to do it.

I think you can just change the scale on the graph and say:

diplay units: thousands.

Let me know if this works - it seems to when I test in Excell 2003.

The question should be [red]Is it worth trying to do?[/red] not [blue] Can it be done?[/blue]

Oh, and you can add the 'K' in the properties of the data lables, custom, K in the way Glenn described.

You must make sure that you have the second comma in the format, between the 0 and the K. This is what scales down numbers. It factors down numbers by a factor of 1000 per comma, so 4000000 becomes 4M with a custom number format of 0,,"M"

Cheers, Glenn.
