I have been working on DataStage for few months now. Basically I have been designing simple jobs (its a BaseWareHouse with Sybase 11.5 as source and ORACLE 8i as Target) so far. As I was familiar with other ETl Tools like informatica, I have been able to manage so far but for complex activities I have not been able for make progress. I tried understanding DATASTAGE basics thru its online help but it is very very inadequate. For Instance I have not been able to understand :
what is UNIverse and UNIstage ???
How do dates work in Datastage ???

Is there a document or book or white-papers which explain the mechanics/architecture of DS Designer and art of developing DS Jobs ???

Universe is a database owned by IBM, DataStage uses it to store repositry information such as details about projects, jobs and job components. Since DataStage installs a working Universe database engine it is sometimes convenient to create temporary or staging tables using the local Universe database and the Universe stage.

A hash file, which is an extremely fast way of carrying out primary key lookups, is similar to a Universe table.

You don't need to use Universe or UNIstage in any of your jobs. In most cases you can do everything you need using your own databases and hash files.

The DataStage help files are moderately helpful. Far more useful are the DataStage PDF documentation that you should be able to find from your start menu under the DataStage/Online Manuals folder. These aren't really online, they are just PDFs.

The "DataStage Server Job Developer's Guide" is one of the more useful documents.

There are some useful documents at provided by the resident ETL experts which provide advice for setting up environments and jobs.

Finally a good source of information is Ascential training, there are now a range of online training courses for about US$500 each that explain advanced programming and best practices.

Hi AshishVinny,
have you then found good documentation? If so, can you please tell me where?
Thank you very much, Nat.

hi manjulamadhu,
Is it possible for you to let me know the links to the documentation available online someplace. Or can you possibly email me the server job guide, since i am a beginner and am unable to find suitable documentation elsewhere.
