I was thinking of adding new functionality to an application of mine that would allow a user to post data directly to a website they are viewing through a ole web browser. My plan is to implement this using the MSHTML Library. My question is regarding the legal ramifications, if any, that may arise. Because the events in the MSHTML Library deal directly with the sites source-code, I am fearful it may not comply with the DMCA. I understand that it would be appropriate to direct my legal questions to my attorney, but I was just looking for general feedback before I went to that level.

Thanks,

-Kevin

I meant "classes" rather than events.

Because the events in the MSHTML Library deal directly with the sites source-code....

Kevin,

Before anyone can answer your question, they would need to know which jurisdication (country, US state or whatever) you are in. Laws vary from one jurisdiction to another. For example, in the EU, I believe that what you are proposing is not only legal, but you have a positive right to do it, under the provisions for interoperability. But elsewhere, that won't necessarily be the case.

Another point: Don't put too much reliance on the replies you get here, especially if they are from techies rather than legal experts. That applies to this reply as well.

Mike

Sorry Mike, good point.

I am in the United States. I plan on eventually talking to an attorney, but first wanted to get some opinions.

Thanks again,

Kevin

Kevin,

Well, as I said before, don't put any reliance on this, but I would be surprised if there was any problem in what you are proposing. After all, you are not copying or adapting the target site's HTML in any way -- merely making use of it.

Maybe other folk here can give you more definite advice.

Mike
