Need faster access to data of about 100,000 records

I am using asp page to show search results from my item table which has around 100,000 records. I am showing 20 items per page with previous and next page options. The search results can have any number of records. How can I make my access faster so that it show the first page without much delay and also while navigating to previous or next page the delay is minimum. Please suggest a solution.

I've done this once by creating a custom control in VB that has a datagrid on it. This control calls an ASP page that returned a recordset streamed into XML.
This worked quite fast without using paging.
