I'm helping a client who has a very old Aloha system. It was purchased used. One terminal died, I popped the hard disk into a desktop computer, installed drivers etc. The XP Embedded runs fine on the new system, but Aloha dies immediately upon startup with the error "Failed to register station name, error 0x23" . Not sure why, given its the same hard disk from the other terminal. I want to reinstall, but without the CD I can't really do it! Any help is apperciated!!

Failed to register station name is usually a result of Aloha trying to access the network card and not being to, in my experience. And it seems to be hardware specific, too... for example on some types of computers I've seen this error just because the cable wasn't plugged in, or because two copies of Aloha were running. Or because TCP/IP was set up for DHCP and had no address.
The good news, you don't need the CD for this, it's not going to help you at all. But you're going to have to do some poking around and report back.

The computer is networked to the BOH computer, and can resolve its host name no problem. I can share files back and forth, and have static IPs set up for the whole network. I even set the BOH computer as the gateway for this system, but that made no difference.
Any other ideas out there?

It could be the lananumber, it needs to be zero and usually is by default when there is one card in the system. But reading your post a little more closely, it looks like you threw in a hard disk that was already being used on another system, which would probably have left the old card as zero, even though it's no long the system.
Google for a utility call lanacfg.exe and run it from a command prompt as:
lanacfg.exe showlanapaths
The card in your new machine needs to have it's lana number as zero, and if it's not, it needs to be changed.

The lanacfg worked like a charm. Yay! Thanks for your help. Now I just need to figure out why drink orders aren't going to the bar when entered from the restaurant terminal. They do print fine when entered by waitstaff from the bar terminal, which I did as a test. Probably should open a new thread for this question!
