hello all,

here's the deal, I have been asked to purchase whatever we need when it comes to virus security and not sure where to start (we have current software but it's a long story as to why I've been asked to purchase up-to-date virus protection software. Don't ask)

We currently have at least 10 seats which we would like to protect. I was told to look into the enterprise edition which is for the server and many seats but not sure.

I need advise on this issue please. Thanks

P.S. We need this software to run on Windows 98 Second Edition for now (we will be upgrading to XP in the next 6 months)

I *highly* recommend 7.1 Enterprise. I think it's the best antivirus program out there.

It has a highly functional (and reliable) update process that's no hassle for the admin.

Ditto - I am not sure what the minimum purchase is but look into McAfee TVD (total virus defense)It basicly gives you rights to any of McAfee's software products and updates (server and workstation) on a per node basis.

Thanks guys for your expert input. This gives me some basis to go/research on.

Thanks again.

Thanks.

I was just reading the 7.1 enterprise installation guide and the package only supports workstations with Windows 2000, NT, XP Home/Pro but not 98 Second Edition.

Back to more reading...

I belive TVD would give you downgrade rights to an older version that support 98

For this number of machines you might also want to look into ViruScan ASap. It's managed on the web. It's intended for workstations not servers.

here's what I've been able to gather at this time. Thanks all for your input.

Before committing to EPO/McAfee last year, we did a head to head comparison of the Symantec & NAI offerings.

a) Based on 9000 seats, we could get a better price from NAI
b) Since my company is global (spread across 15 countries with many sites of varying sizes), EPO was far more scalable to our needs
c) We found Symantec to be more user-friendly, but at the expense of customisation
d) At the time, Symantec didn't appear to have the same level of reporting capabilities, but I'm not sure whether that has now been improved upon
e) The big downside of NAI, as you've probably read many times in this forum is support. They are improving their knowledgebases, but there's a long way to go before they can match Symantec. When an NAI support engineer says they will call you back, just don't believe them.

Hope that helps

Get a good vendor too ;)

I'll enlighten you people about what McAfee's suites consist of.

First of all, you buy a license to use the latest versions of each software title in a certain suite during the license period. The initial costs of a license (perpetual/everlasting) are relatively high, but afterwards you just have to upgrade your license every year, for around 40% of the initial costs, to get support and the right to use updates/upgrades and so on...

Than for the suites. I'll state the most important products. In all suites there are certain titles that are always included such as Alert Manager and Installation Designer.

VSE = VirusScan for Windows, Netshield for Netware
VirusScan Security Suite

SAV = VSE + Epo and Threatscan
Active VirusScan Suite

TVD = VSE + Groupshield for Exchange/Domino + Webshield SMTP
Total Virus Defense

AVD = TVD + Epo and Threatscan
Active Virus Defense

ATP = AVD + Spamkiller and Desktop Firewall
Active Threat Protection

And thus, VirusScan Enterprise as well as VirusScan Multiplatform are included in every suite. You can even upgrade to any new versions of these titles as long as you have a working grantnumber...

10 workstations i would advice VSE or TVD, depending on whether you have a Mailserver (exchange or domino). Epo would be an overkill, both financially as practically...

And go for 11 nodes, it's cheaper than 10...
