Whenever I try to use Windows Explorer, Explorer restarts with a dialog box that states "Explorer.exe has generated errors and is being closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created."

I believe that this started after some game or MP3 player software was installed. Short of reinstalling Windows 2000 Professional, does anyone have an idea how to fix?

Thanks,
kshallen

I know I say this a lot but it does work. Go to a command promt and type:
sfc /scanonce
then reboot (You may need the Win2K CD).

If that does not help let me know. James Collins

I performed the suggested action (sfc /scanonce) and rebooted. The software checked the protected dlls with those on the original CD (yes, it did require the CD), but it finished without any type of notification or completion message. I then rebooted again and tried Windows Explorer again. The original problem is still present. Any more ideas? I'm all ears.

Thanks.

I don't know if this has anything to do with the explorer.exe error, but here goes.

I was having the same problem (still do), but when it happens to me I run AdWare by Lavasoft, to remove all the spyware that has accumulated on my machine, and then reboot and it starts working again.

Don't know if its just a fluke, or if some of the spyware is causeing errors.

Thanks for the tip. The AdWare utility took care of the problem. There was a registry entry in software/microsoft/internet explorer/extensions. The AdWare propgram found this entry and once I removed it, I could now use Windows Explorer (either through the start key, or by hot key (Windows - E).

Thanks for the help.

FYI - i've found a lot of the opensource p2p "filesharing" services like Kazaa and Morpheus cause this. Specifically cyberdoor software - like Bonzi Buddy and junk like that cause it. Adaware is a great tool to get rid of pop-ups and programs that like to try and force themselves into valid software - therefore choking explorer.

Thats why i hate opensource software! No standards..just a free-for-all! ;) ANyway - thats just my experience with that error. I've never seen that error on a decently clean system without a 3rd party filesharing app installed.

Great tips everyone!
