Hi all,
currently I am working for a company with approx. 30 employees, 1 w2k server handling all network services (AD,DNS,DHCP, etc..) , file and data storage and 2 databases. They've asked me to optimize the network to increase speed.
We currently have a cisco 1721 router. 1 NIC card on server.
I'm thinking about setting up another server to move the network services from current server. I'd just like some advice from others who have done the same or may have something to add. Also, would sata disks raid1 be ok for this new setup? (trying to save $$)
Thanks!

This really isn't to much help except this... if your not paying then upgrade to something better. This is a great opportunity for IT departments to get the much needed upgrades that the CEO's never want to spend money on but like to complain about how slow things are.

If you are thinking of adding another server for Inet app's then use your existing system for that and upgrade your core server to something current. That way you have something fast for your file serving.

Just a pet peeve of mine, when I see yourself have to take the assigned task of having to imporve the speed, efficency, or whatever but you always have to do cheap as possible. Then the boss wonders why it's not faster.... wow, what if IT deparment could write company checks... ;)

Just my two cents.

You're getting new hardware with that SBS server, right? I would srongly encourage you to get a second NIC for the server - that way you can setup ISA server (if you got the Premium edition) or RRAS to only connect to the router on one NIC while the rest of the network sits on the other NIC.

What of other hardware in the network? I would hope they have a switch rather than hubs for the workstation connections.

Forget about ISA or SBS server now. You need new hardwares instead of software. You should separate the DC and file server and database server. Of course it will make it real slow to have all things in one box.
