Hey people! I have a question about a network wiring wall mount rack i've recently installed. I'm trying to configure and wire it but everything I try doesnt make any sense. I dont have a picture but i'll draw it describe it the best I can below.

8U Wall Mount Rack - Cable Management Insert -
1U - 24 Port Patch Panel
1U - Cable Management Insert
1U - 24 Port Patch Panel
1U - Cable Management Insert
1U - 48 Port Switch
1U - Open
1U - Open
1U - Shelf

I have 3' Patch Cables and I can't seem to get them all in and routed properly. 3' seemed to be the most popular so I went with those but am having a hard time cramming them all in.

1. Should I get 1' Patch Cables?
2. Should/Can I reconfigure My Rack so I can use my 3' cables?

Thanks for any help!

put the Switch between the Patch panels with Management in between put your cords into the horizontal management and tuck the excess vertically down the sides of the rack , if there is no room then find some velcro and bundle the excess neatly to the side leaving the switches and (most important)the Lableing clear.

I agree with Trotski. With the switch in between, you have better patch cord distribution and management. Also try some of the 1' patch cords, that would eliminate some of the excess cordage. Then distribute the cords on both sides by NOT crossing the middle of the switch with any cords at all.

But you do need to think about the cable management on the back to the patch panels and make sure that management will work for you now, and when you add to it.

Leviton has a cord manager I have used a several times that works very well. The model number is 41D1R-HCM. You can download the PDF at this URL:
Then click the 41D1R-HCM item to download. I get them from ADI for about $18.00.

Great...thanks for the tips guys. I'm going to try that today and see how it goes. I wish i'd gotten a bunch of 1's but i'll make due with the 3's. I dont think my boss wants any further delay ;)

I'll run the top patch panel out to the right and back to the left in the cable management and patch them in to the first 24 of the switch (which on this switch go 1,3,5 across the top and 2,4,6 across the bottom making the first 24 on the left of the switch). I'll do the opposite with the bottom patch panel.

I'll post a pic of the final* product ;)

I would use those rear cable management deals but it's a pull down rack and i've found it's tough to get the slack required in order to have it open easily. I've just velcroed the bunches in quarters (4 bunches for each patch panel) then again in half (1 half for each patch panel) and then again for the main bunch and kinda create a little S bunch in the back for slack.

Again, i'll show ya ;) Thanks again for the help guys, i posted this on 3 other sites and got nothin! you guys rule i'll be comin back.

I would also go:
patch panel
manager
switch
manager
patch panel

assuming you are using 24 port patch panels with a 48 port switch, then even 1 foot or 1/1/2 foot patch cords would do the job, look neater also.

patch port one of the top panel to port one of the top row of switch ports etc,the on the second patch panel patch port one to the first port of the bottom row on the switch.

Good Luck,
Bob

you could also consider using 2U wire managers. Especially if you use 48 port patch panels. ALso, if you add more equipment later below and start routing to different panels with the cables terminated already on these panels, you will need the 3 foot and even 5 foot cords if you dress everything to the side an then back.
