NEC Electra Elite 192 1

I have an electra elite 192 less then a year old and I'm being told that I need to use 3 slots to add a T1 card (and newer systems only need 1 slot). Is this a limitation of the firmware, cabinet, or processor? It was explained to me that the environment only supports 8 ports in a slot so the 24 channels in the T1 would use up 3 slots. I only have 2 slots free so this is a problem. Also, without going intot he console, how do I identify the cards in the system? I am guessing (from experience with other systems and what cards look like) I have a CPU card in the CPU slot, the ISA slot is open, slot 1 has an 8 port CO line card, slot 2 unknown?, slots 3-5 look like 8 port digital phone cards, slots 6 and 7 are open and slot 8 has a card with a hard disk and serial port on it (whats that?).

Any help would be appreciated.

Your digital station cards will say ESI(8), the CO lines are COI(8) and the voice mail card VMS has the hard drive and db9 serial port connection.
The t-1 card would like to have 3 slots (8 ports per slot) but you can use 2 if you have 16 channels or less. The programming is kinda screwy because you have to start with trunk 9 and not trunk 1. If you are replacing all your copper trunks, remove the COI. What designation does the unknown card have? It might be VRS or SLI?
Hope this helps some but you may be in for reprogamming slot assignments or adding a cabinet.

Thanks. After further investigation I now know I have:

1 Slot Voice Mail
3 Slots 24 Station (8 ea. slot)
1 COT 8 Central Office Line interfaces
1 CPU Processor card
1 ??? Unknown card.

Still not sure whats in slot 2. I didnt see any designation on any of the cards.... The card has only 1 transformer on it (like the ones used for CO line card) and at least 8 large items that look like SIMs (about the same size as the old 32 pin sims for PC's but encased in a brown material so you cant actually see any chips) It looks like there music on hold too? (at least theres an RCA phono connector on the side)

Whats the ISA slot for?

With the phono jack it could be an external paging card

Methinks you have an ecr card in slot 2.used for nite ring external page control etc.
The T-1 limitation is due to the Time slot allocation of the backplane and cpu. Yes if you want all 24 channels of T-1 than the card must go into slot 1 and slot 2 and 3 are vacant.

2) I was told a newer system can have a T1 card in 1 slot. Is there a field upgrade avaialble? Whats involved?

It is true that a newer version of the system will support a T-1 card in one slot. In addition the new system will also support 16 digital stations in each slot with a daughter board on a special ESI card (ESI(B) + ESI(E)). The only requirement to support this new software in your case is a new cpu. The cost should run about the same as buying an expansion card and cabinet for your existing Elite from and NEC dealer. So, if you are out of slots and are needing to expand it might be better to upgrade to the Elite IPK instead of adding a cabinet. There are alot of new features to be released on the IPK that will not be available on the Elite 192.

Are you double sure about the replacement CPU thing? I'm still being told I have to replace the CPU and the cabinet to upgrade? The vendor is looking into it and the NEC web site has nothing on it. Is there an NEC upgrade hkit part number I can reference?

Yes, I am sure. There is a new cabinet also, but it is not required. The new cabinet adds basic external paging output (ECR) and the serial connectors on the side were changed to DB9's, but that is all. The only parts you need are a CPUI(ver)-U(hardware ver) and the PKU 192-U. The most current release for the IPK is 1500.

My vendor still swears that the cabinet is cheaper then the PKU-192? Do you know the part numbers and pricing?
