Does anyone out there use NDMP? If so, what is the easiest way to restore data that's been backed up using NDMP? How are your restore times? Can you restore all the way down to the file level? or do you have to do the whole volume? FYI: Netapp NAS directly connected to ADIC Scalar100 with 2 AIT-3 drives, and networker 6.2 on Win2000 Advanced server. Thanks!

Hi LASTEVE,

With NetWorker 6.2 ndmp backup, you'll have to run single file restores via command line.
(Assure that HIST=y is entered in the "Application information" for the NDMP client in NetWorker. This flags the NDMP server you are backing up to send NetWorker the file history needed to perform index restores)

windows> recover -c <client name>

Read the documentation about it's use.

NDMP recover performance will be typical unless using DAR (Direct Access Restore). DAR restores are much faster as it negates the need for NetWorker to have to read the entire contents of a particular volume(s) you are restoring from. Instead, the volume with the single file(s) you are trying to restore from will be loaded and tape positioning will be much faster than non-DAR restore.

Considerations:
Does the NDMP server support DAR? (we know that NetWorker 6.2 does).

Enable DAR in NetWorker: In the NDMP client/Application information, add DIRECT=y (assuring that HIST=y is there as well). Once DIRECT=y is entered, all subsequent backups will be restored using DAR (only if restoring via index restore; "recover" command line).

good luck!
