Hi all, just need to pick your brains here.

I've got a STK L20 tape robot with two SDLT drives. One connected to the W2k backup server the other connected to a NetApp filer. I've managed to set up the Robot, the drives and the filer ok and verified the connection;

C:\Program Files\VERITAS\Volmgr\bin>set_ndmp_attr -verify
Verify Host name: dbysan1
Connecting to host "dbysan1" as user "root"...
Waiting for connect notification message...
Opening session--attempting with NDMP protocol version 4...
Opening session--successful with NDMP protocol version 4
host supports MD5 authentication
Getting MD5 challenge from host...
Logging in using MD5 method...
Host info is:
host name "dbysan01"
os type "NetApp"
os version "NetApp Release 6.4.2P6"
host id "0033608873"
Login was successful
Host supports LOCAL backup/restore
Host supports 3-way backup/restore

When I try and backup the NDMP filer I get a status 99 (NDMP backup failure). (The tape lirary is selecting the tape ok and putting it in the correct drive).

1) When creating the policy I can't browse to the filer - is this normal? (I also can't connect to the filer via hosts in the admin console).

2) What is the syntax for a path on the filer?

Any ideas greatly appreciated. :)

Cracked it.

2) Syntax for NDMP path is;

/vol/volx/<share>

1) still can't browse the filer though.

NetBackup client software cannot be installed on the NDMP filer (Symantec doesn't make an agent that actually installs on the filer itself.) That is why admins cannot click the browse to 'see' selections on the filer. You have to manually enter the paths as they would appear if you were logged onto the filer OS.

Hello,

You shouldn't be able to connect to the NDMP host in the admin console. This process relies on talking to the NDMP client on the server (which is not used for NDMP hosts).

Is the NDMP host configured under (in the gui) Devices --> NDMP Hosts?

The file isn't under Devices -> Hosts but is under Host Properties -> Clients

Underneath 'Hosts', there should be another window called 'NDMP Hosts'. The NDMP server needs to have an entry in this view in order for NDMP backups to work.

In order to add the host, open Actions --> New --> NDMP Host (when you are in the Devices view).
