NAVCE - Why is live update staying with Feb 27 defs? 1

All part of Norton's new plan, just update the liveupdate once a week (every Wednesday) unless there is a major virus. And release Intelligent Updater as they are updated with new viruses. If you ask me I HATE the new plan since my computers are setup to use Live Update.

Oh, it's wonderful that they brought this to our attention straightforward.

I hate the idea as well. Especially with new viruses coming out.

This information is on the Symantec web site, yes? I'll have to go and dig around. J.R. Juiliano

Kind of low key actually, I only noticed it because I deal with Virus Protection on a daily basis. I have seen it mentioned in their tech support forum and their response seems to be that this is the way it has always been. That they are updating Intelligent updater more often and Liveupdate is on its usual schedule. Sure does not seem that way to me, and it is a real pain for me to manually update servers. Doesn't this policy kind of defeat the purpose the LiveUpdate feature was designed for?

Really. I'm on a small network with under 50 users and this is exactly why we signed up for it. Even if the clients didn't all update at once it was at least comforting to know that the servers picked up the latest definitions right away.

I might just have to accelerate the idea to put the updates through the network (instead of every client connecting to the Internet for LU) and manually update the primary. Bummer. J.R. Juiliano

I had the same concern. Here is the response to my query from Symantec:

Per your request I will try to explain the reason why it "appears" that your definitions are out of date:
Here is a cut and paste from (Symantecs security response page).
Intelligent Updater Defs created March 5
Intelligent Updater Defs released March 5
LiveUpdate Defs released February 27
Norton AntiVirus Corp. Edition Defs Version: 40305a
Norton AntiVirus Corp. Edition Sequence Number: 15201
Norton AntiVirus for Mac Defs released February 28
Total Viruses Detected: 58980

The way that Liveupdate works (today as well as in the past) is that our Liveupdate servers are updated with new definitions every Wednesday unless a category 3 or higher virus outbreak occurs. If this happens, we will update the Liveupdate servers as soon as the definitions to catch the cat. 3 or higher virus are ready. The recent change that we have made deals with the intelligent updater which is now being released on a daily basis. If you choose to, you can download this file (available on our web site) and run it on the primary server to update your definitions on a daily basis. The only difference between the updates that Liveupdate retrieves and the the intelligent updater is that the intelligent updater contains definitions to catch the level 1 and 2 virus' that come out during the week. This is why, in the above cut and paste, you see a different definition date for Liveupdate and intelligent updater.
I hope this helps explain the situation
