I recently upgraded from NSW 2004 Professional to NSW 2005 Premier. I did an uninstall of NSW 2004 before installing NSW 2005. I'm runnng WinXP Pro w/SP2. I did not have the problem I'm about to describe with NSW 2004 and NSW 2003 before that.
When I boot my PC with the auto-protect option enabled it takes a full 2 minutes +- a couple of seconds for WinXP to become usuable. After the first minute it appears that everything has loaded but my HDD light is on solid for another full minute and my mouse shows the hourglass icon. My system is thrashing away for the second minute.
When I boot my PC with the auto-protect option disable it takes 1 minute +- a couple of seconds for WinXP to become usuable. A full minute less. Yes, I'm actually using my watch to time these tests. In this case all I have to do is enable auto-protect manually and everything is just fine.
As for now it seems that auto-protect at boot time is a resource hog that is giving me fits.
