hello people. I came on here hoping someone with similar experience would know of a Symantec fix, but... :(

I am trying to get Norton Antivirus 2004 installed on a lady's Win 98 SE machine. It keeps coming up with an 'internal error' message and advising me to uninstall and reinstall. I have installed, uninstalled, reinstalled about six times and only once did it complete without reporting an internal error. Then, when I tried to activate it online, the 'Next' button didn't work, so couldn't complete.

Frustrating.

Symantec's website says this internal error happens if you have particular software on your machine, but this machine has not got First Aid or the other one they mention. Their website says if their solution ( uninstall-reinstall) doesn't work, send them a log file.

Thanks Symantec VERY helpful.

Does anyone have a UK phone number to enable activation that way - if I ever manage to get it to properly installed?

I've run into this quite often with Win98 - it just doesn't want to let go! In each case, I have uninstalled NAV (even Symantec Corp. version) manually following the directions offered at their support site.

enter "manual uninstall NAV 98"

Run through the instructions (registry edits, etc) get rid of all the old pointers and then reinstall 2004.

thanks melask, I will give that a go :)

Get a copy of Windows Install Cleanup, run it.
Uninstall any references to previous versions of Norton Anti Virus. Next step is Very Important.
Make a backup copy of registry first, then run regedit and delete any references to Norton Anti Virus versions. You can find help on backing up registry in your help files or on Microsofts Website.
Use Windows Explorer and Search for any file references pertaining to Norton Anti Virus and delete them, making sure they are Norton Anti Virus files.
Make sure you have a fresh copy of Windows installer, located at C:\WINDOWS\System32\msiexec.exe /V and that it is running when you try to reinstall NAV 2004.
To make sure its running go to administrative tools in control panel and then to Services, scroll down to Windows installer, and start or restart the service.
Now you should be able to install NAV 2004. Good Luck

thanks rtoelle469. I have given the lady her machine back with an alternative on there now, but I will copy your advice off for the next time.
Appreciated :)
