I'm using Norton Systemworks which is NAV2003 on my XP machine. I have autoprotect checked, but when I log in it shows an X on the icon. It does a checking message 1 of 1, then I'm able to change it back to autoprotect enabled. I can't scan my computer or get live updates. The live update flashes a 1 second message of LiveUpdate is already running. I have run ad-aware 6 with all the updates, Spybot, and CWShredder. Here is my current hijack log.

Scott

Firstly, you are running Windows XP, so disable system restore (start -> right click my computer -> properties -> system restore and untick "System Restore enabled on all drives" then acknowledge all the warnings).
Then have HijackThis fix these:
F0 - system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\fservice.exe
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\fservice.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [explore] c:\windows\explore.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Exif Launcher.lnk = ?
O4 - Global Startup: hpoddt01.exe.lnk = ?
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {029CA12C-89C1-46a7-A3C7-82F2F98635CB} - C:\Program Files\Kontiki\bin\bh309190.dll

Be sure to re enable system restore after unticking the items and rebooting.

Additionally, you have MyWebSearch installed. If you don't want or use this, I would strongly recommend uninstalling it from control panel.

John

John,
Thanks for the response!

The Exif Launcher.lnk is my Fujifilm digital camera software and the hpoddt01.exe.lnk is my HP printer. I did all the other steps listed and as you can see from the hijack log below, the
F0 - system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\fservice.exe and
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\fservice.exe
are still there. I also cannot run my TrojanHunter software or get NAV reinstalled since before your response. What a mess! Any additional help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Scott

We had a machine last week that was having some slowdown problems. When I removed one of the norton modules from the startup list, the problems went away. When I looked at my hijack this log, I had a bho for NAV, I didnt know why there should be such a thing so I erased it. It helped.

Additionally, you have 3Degrees loaded. I have not been able to positively identify this as one specific application, but there are a few posts relating to a peer to peer network shared application of this name. If this is the case, you may want to uninstall this as well.

RedSwoosh seems to be a program for initiating fast peer to peer downloads. Again, uninstall if not required.

If this still doesn't work, press F8 during the "Starting windows XP" screen and go in in safe mode, and hold down the shift key as you login to bypass loading startup group items.
You should then be able to run your Norton, and perhaps rename some of these pesky files that come back so it won't load (notably fservice.exe; explorer.exe is part of Windows so don't rename that).

John

Odd things occuring are Trojanhunter program is unable to run. Same with Norton AV which is at this moment half installed. If I try to install NAV alone from my systemworks CD, it tells me the admin has restrictions that dont allow this type of install. Well, I am the admin. Trendmicro didn't find any viruses. Also when I tried in XP to use MSCONFIG on mine and my sons account, I now have some of his crap like MSN messenger loading on my profile. YUCK. I appreciate both of you guys helping me out. At this point, if this was my machine, I think I'd do a backup and then try the following things as an experiment.
(and just so you know, Im a 98 user, these are just my thoughts based on reading and searches.)

First-John's suggestion to turn system restore off.

Messenger, I'd look in add/remove programs and try to uninstall it. If that didnt work Id let hijack this fix the running process and 04 entry that relates to messenger.

Norton antivirus, Id try add/remove programs first, then search symantec site for manual removal instructions for my version and follow those. (or all of systemworks if necessary to get system cleaned up.)

Reviewing that link and google searching on some items I would fix any of following that remain with hijack this

The r1,r0,f0,f2 entries.
the o2 bho for norton antivirus.
this o16 entry
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} -
Then Id follow advice in merijn link and let lspfix try to repair the o10 entries.
(faq608-4650 has some troubleshooting steps including comments about lspfix and winsock repair).

And then see where I was and either continue troubleshooting or restore from backup and try a different approach depending on what the circumstances looked like.

Again, please do not try these suggestions without a backup unless you have confirmation from someone else that has more definite knowledge about their effects than I do.

I think I'm just about there using all of your help. The link Diogenes10 gave me,

had most of the information I needed to root out the poltergeist.

Using the information I rebooted XP into safe mode with command prompt. Found these three files
Sservice.exe was in c:\windows\system
Fservice.exe c:\windows\system32
and Winlogon.exe in c:\windows

The files were about 38mb each.

Because NAV was so screwed up in a half uninstall half install, I had to use the RNAV2003.Exe utility to manually remove NAV so I could reinstall correctly. My NAV works, Trojan hunter runs again and all the other programs that were having problems appear to be okay. Thanks to each and every one of you guys for your help!

Glad things are working OK. Just ensure that you have switched system restore back on as it does perform a useful function.

Thanks again guys. Everything is set back up. This thing really made a mess of any protection you tried to set up on your computer. Except for Hijack this, just about every AV or Trojan hunter would not work properly. We know what to look for now, hopefully we can help any others with this problem.

Cheers,
Scott
