Hi,

I just installed RH7.3 and the built-in Samba. from Windows box, I could browse the linux share. from the linux I could use smbclient \\windowsbox\share -U xxx to get connected to the linux share.

However, when I tried to use the Nautilus broswer and type:
smb:

I could see all the computers and their shares on the network , when I tried to access any subfolders under the share, I got access denied error message. what seems to be the problem. Thanks.

Phil

There may be a conflict going on with the logon user name and/or password between the two linux computers. Is the client computer a dual boot with Windows and linux?

If so, the way I solved that problem was giving each operating system its own user name, password, and IP address. If not, check to make sure smb has the etc/samba/smbpassword file. If it does, you may have to do an update on the password file (Redo adduser 1st and smbadduser 2nd using the same name and password). If it doesn't, create one.

Be sure to use letters and/or numbers for the user name and password that does not have spaces in them. I ran into a problem using my name for a logon because of the space between the first name and the last name.

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks, I found out the correct syntax to do that from RedHat web page:

in Nautilus:

smb://user:password@servername/share

This would enable me to see all the subfolders etc. However, I have to type my password in clear text in the Nautilus browser. I do not know why to set it so that the password is not shown as typed ( BTW, on smb.conf, the password encryption = yes )

Thanks,
