I occasionally get an error message when trying to use Active Directory Users and Computers from my workstation:

'Naming information cannot be located because:
The server is not operational.
Contact your system administrator to verify that your domain is properly configured and is currently online.'

Does this mean that my AD server is flaking out, or something else? Resolving SIDs to usernames when looking at security settings on network shares is also draggy too...

It only appears to happen on my workstation though. I'm using the Windows 2000 Resource Kit. Would a reinstallation fix it, you think???

Check your DNS settings first.

Mark-
That seemed to speed up the time it takes 'Active Directory Users and Computers' to load, but the SID resolution is still taking forever...

So did that fix the error for Naming information?

Try flushing your DNS Cache and reregistering witht he DNS Server

IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS
IPCONFIG /REGISTERDNS
NET STOP NETLOGON
NET START NETLOGON

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Yes, I think it may have fixed it. Time will tell, as it occurs randomly...

Thanks.
