NAM Model 4 -- troubleshoot diagnose working status --

I have a NAM model 4 that I would like to use to replace an older StarTalk -- It will be paired with an 0x32 -- But none of the Feature codes will respond (**invalid feature**) -- Oddly, F**Xftest does not prompt for a password (I thought that came from CPU, not VM) -- If I remember correctly xftest is actually querying the KSU

I have attempted to access the NAM using an 8x24 (just as a workbench access device to the NAM) -- I connected port1 of NAM to port 124 of KSU -- In KSU Maintenance, I can see the port 124 changed from **unequipped** to **N/A** after NAM connected --

When the NAM boots up:
-- about 30 seconds of hard drive activity
-- it beeps twice
-- about 3 minutes of hard drive activity
-- it will begin to show in KSU Maint as N/A instead of Unequipped
-- it beeps twice
-- Cannot make any admin to the VM
-- I never hear the "slot machine sound of Jackpot ringing" that is common upon a successful NAM bootup

Any thoughts on what I should check next?

Could be the hard drive is faulty.

Are you sure its not a fiber NAM and that you actualy tried to hook up its modem underneath to the KSU?
Modem cards have 1 voice port only on the card.

I wish it was a fiber NAM -- It actually does not appear to have a modem rj11 -- It does have the dual rj11 card with two dangling teledapt dongles -- the ports are labeled with a **1** and a **2**

assuming it is the hard drive: Is there a means to verify my hardware cabinet/motherboard so I can get a compatible hard drive? If I have a model4, does that mean it came orig with 4.0 software and that I can only replace with 4.0 or 4.1?

Oops -- Scratch that last question: I just remembered that **model 4** means 4 port, not sw 4.

This system has a note on case that says 2.2 so I believe this is SW 2.2

-- which leads to my next question -- If I have a model4 and I purchase a 4.1 hard drive, are there any compatibility concerns? For instance, is a 4.1 hard drive for fiber the same as a 4.1 for copper? And are there older versions of Model 4 NAM hardware that will not work with newer NAM software?

How about this: I just tried a hard drive from a different model 4 and it still does not seem to work -- perhaps I have a bad motherboard or bad interface card? -- does anyone have any suggestions about further troubleshooting?

Does the 824 have DR5 software? If not, it's not compatible and the NAM will not finish the bootup sequence.

Swapping out the hard drive just killed any keycodes. It's now a model 2.

To put a R4.1 hard drive into a R2.2 NAM you'll also need to bring RAM up to at least 16mb.

I may have a DR5 cartridge to facilitate future experimentation. I'll look for it -- I did not want to play with the working 0x32 with the old StarTalk

BUT more importantly, would I be better off buying a used or refurb'd NAM to get to the 4 port 4.1 that I need, purchase a 4.1 hard drive, or attempt a rebuild?

The unit may have already been a dead unit as it didn't seem to work with the orig hard drive either (not when I tried it on an 0x32 about a year ago) -- I was just more willing to throw the dice on this second go around -- BUT assuming I did scrap it, and for future reference, are the key codes stored on ROM in a circuit board in the Cabinet, or on are they stored on the Hard Drive?

Sounds like you meant they are stored in ROM (not on the hard drive)

So did I scrap the codes on the model 4 cabinet hardware, or did I scrap the codes on the hard drive I had temporarily installed from another cabinet?

The keycodes are stored on the hard drive, which are based on the serial number of the NAM. The serial number is stored in ROM on the NAM. The keycodes will be gone on the hard drive you temporarily installed from the other NAM. They should still be there on the original R2.2 hard drive.

It would probably be less trouble and cost to buy another NAM that is already R4.1 if you haven't worked with NAM's. They are finicky little critters. The biggest issue with NAM hard drives is finding the correct one for your model. There are copper, fiber, App Mod II, V1G, V2G and V3G models. The hard drives are not interchangeable for the most part due to issues with drivers.

You can probably find a NAM at a decent price on eBay, but don't expect any help from the seller.
