Having an arguement with a co-worker about whether Nacho Cheese is a flavor of it's own or does any cheese used to create nachos. I'm not giving my opinion because I don't want to taint your's. Your thoughts?

Okay, I'm admitadly weak and cannot resist.

While nacho has a definition "a snack or appetizer consisting of a small piece of tortilla topped with cheese, hot peppers, etc., and broiled." nacho cheese does not. Based on the definition of a nacho I say any cheese placed on a nacho should merit the title "Nacho Chese".

Although I usually nuke mine as opposed to broiling them so I suppose my nachos are some sort of evolved nacho cousin.

It's my cheese, nacho cheese!

Did you mean, "¿Donde está el queso de mi padre?" (meaning, IIRC, "Where is my father's cheese?")

But I digress. Nacho cheese seems to me to be melted cheddar cheese with some jalapeño and/or other spices mixed in.

Solum potestis prohibere ignes silvarum.

Nacho cheese refers to that unnaturally orange, eerily viscous (possibly non-newtonian) cheese-like substance that has a slight jalapeno flavoring.

Hell, maybe I like to melt Gouda, Camembert and Stilton over some tortilla chips for a snack.

But if you ask for nacho cheese and I hand you some Gouda, are you really getting what you wanted?

Nacho cheese is a phrase meant to symbolize a type of cheese, and essentially becomes a single word in meaning. It can also be used as two separate words used to describe any type of cheese on your particular nachos. So just like if you look at your socks and say, "There is a hole in one!", you are not talking about the ants golfing inside your stockings. You are using the individual meaning of each of those words instead of the meaning of the phrase.

Nah, flap; it was an exclamation of dispair along the lines of the book "Who Moved My Cheese?"

And, in our football stadium, I sit in a "Nacho Cheese-Free" section.

Meaning all nachos must be free of cheese, or the stadium is free of Nacho-Cheese?

Point taken AnotherHiggins, that's the best arguement I've heard thus far.

However, If I ask you for nachos and you give me the aformentioned yummy creation, does that not make the combination of Gouda, Camembert, and Stilton "Nacho Cheese"?

Yes, exactly! ;-)

Using AnotherHiggins line of questioning.... if I say "Hasselhoff" would you automatically hand me the can of spray cheese?

==> whether Nacho Cheese is a flavor of it's own or does any cheese used to create nachos.
I think the answer is both. I think any cheese can be used to make nachos, including Gouda if that be to your liking, and whatever cheese you used would be the nacho cheese - i.e. the cheese for the nachos.

Is nacho cheese a flavor of it's own? Yes, as John so aptly described earlier. Nacho cheese as a flavoring is that unnaturally orange, eerily viscous, jalapeno-flavored powder. But whatever it actually is, I don't think it's a real cheese. I wouldn't classify it as a dairy product.
