MySQL with Apache on localhost.

I've installed apache 2.049 with PHP 4.1 successfully on my home pc. I'm using localhost for all of my files etc. I've just tried installing MYSQL and I'm getting the following error when typing mysql from the command prompt at c:\mysql\bin .

ERROR 2003: Can't connect to MySQL server on localhost <10061>

The docummentation says to make sure apache is running (it is), I've also tried running the same command while my Norton firewall is turned off to no avail. What else should I try? I'd be more likely to successfully follow directions to the holy grail than I would to sorting this problem out via the docummentation.

what version of mysql? what OS?

MYSQL 4.0.22 & windows xp pro.

check the event log, see if there is any info in that...

check that the mysql service is running

MYSQL service is fine, but I can't find any error logs.
