Hi,

I have a small personal website, and have started using MySQL with my website supplier (UK2.net). However, they will allow me to have only one database (which means I can't use referential integrity with PHPMyAdmin) and I can't create users - so my security potentially sucks.

Does anyone know of any relatively cheap hosters of MySQL in any country that does not have these restrictions? I do NOT want a deal whereby I rent and maintain an entire Linux server, as my requirements are really quite small, and I have enough on my plate teaching myself MySQL and PHP programming at present without worrying about Linux administration.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Simon

I use Webfusion. You can talk to them unlike UK2. Also I can't stand all those bl***** pop-ups. I think I'm allowed 6 databases. They've also got a web-based thing to create and manage your MySQL tables.

Just as a matter of interest why does PHPMyAdmin require a separate database?

Hi,
Thanks for the info. phpmyadmin says that its referential integrity facilities are disabled. In particular the message is:

"Starting with version 2.3.0 phpMyAdmin offers a lot of features to work with master / foreign - tables. To use those as well as the bookmark feature you need special tables with a predefined structure, which we explain below.

See the Quick Install section in this document for a quick way of creating those tables.

If you are the only user of this phpMyAdmin installation, you can use your current database to store those special tables;

If you are setting up a multi-user phpMyAdmin installation, you will need to create a new database and setup special privileges, so, as superuser:

create a new database for phpMyAdmin:
CREATE DATABASE phpmyadmin;"
... etc.

Thanks again,
Simon

I used to have a account at which allows unlimited databases. but what I sense from you're text I think you misinterpeted databases with tables since you have referential integrity between tables and not databases ????? or do I still have to learn something here.

but at nomonthyfees they managed to have a servercrash and they didn't have any backup at all. so I'm really pissed about that

Now I'm with but they only allow 1 database.an extra database costs 10 dollar

It looks like phpmyadmin wants a database of its own in addition to the datdabases it is going to manipulate.

This is certainly the impression I get (i.e. that PHPMyAdmin is insisting on it) as I am not the owner of the PHPMyAdmin Installation - but I might have a go at creating the tables anyway. I'm guess from the need for these extra tables that MySQL doesn't have native Foreign Key support built in. I'm finding it a bit difficult to distinguish between things that MyPHPADmin will/won't do, and those things which MySQL will/won't do. I'm used to Oracle which has all this stuff built in (and, of course, a hefty price tag!).

Thanks anyway - I've had a look at Webfusion (possibly a bit pricey, and will check out no.monthlyfees.com.

MySQL enforces referential integrity for InnoDB but not for the ordinary brand tables. This is planned to be extended in R5.1

Webfusion is £200 per annum. Now you can't grumble about that.

imediabiz.com is the cheapest webhoster on the planet I can find so far and they come with unlimited db's.
