I'm only slightly familiar with myspace.com, which is apparently becoming hugely popular. Is this site in any way a security risk to businesses? I've read some posts that say there may be quite a lot of objectionable content, which would concern me if downloaded to workplace machines.

Thanks

Myspace can be bad. It all depends on who has what on the site. Yes it is a huge site which is the reason why it depends on whos site you visit. Myspace itself is safe but alot of the users on it are not. Some could have viruses named as pics or other things that as soon as you load there site install onto your computer like other sites do. It all boils down to users.

personnaly, i block Myspace on my home machines because of some malicious twerp's fantasy of launching a virus.

if you have a business what busines do your employees have visiting Myspace?

In concept, myspace shouldn't be any worse than any other web page in the world. However, anyone can create a page there & visitors could easily be tricked into following a malicious link. So, like the others have said, it boils down to what your users are doing & the corporate policies about visiting non-work related sites [of any kind].

Thanks to everyone for their input in this matter. We do indeed have corporate policies in effect, and I have added all the myspace.whatever domains I can find to our block list. I haven't heard a word from the (2) or (3) users who have been visiting the site, though I can see from the router logs that access has indeed been denied. Hmmm.... :)

I know that it is blocked at almost every school district in the US. Shame that it has gotten a bad rep because it could have been a great tool for communication. Lately in the news it has been touted as a home for pedophiles. I guess they have moved off the chatrooms and in to myspace.com

One of my clients in my class today was taling about it. Apparently you need to be 15 to have an account there. her son is 11 and his profile said he was 20. She mentioned that his phot was obviously not of a 20 year old. She cancelled his account as she was stunned by the contents of his friends' accounts there.

So, if you have kids, you may want to check what they are posting there.

As far as schools go, is probably more suited to them.

As far as people faking ages etc, well "On the internet, nobody knows you're a dog". It happens in many sites all the time, just need to be carefulw hen dealing with someone you have no idea about.

Viruses via Myspace is an interesting concept. While html is allowed for users profiles, it is quite limited in many respects and how one can launch a virus would be a mystery to be honest. I guess they can give a link to another website which may download malicious code but that is true for all sites including this one.
